Is it just me, or does some people also realise the dull colors of this lens? I wouldn't say Canon lenses or bodies in general because i haven tested all the lenses and bodies but i used to own a 18200 and this is exactly the kind of color im getting. And tweaking it in-camera doesn't help much because its not natural even after tweaking.

Could be many factors but I think it was how you shot it - hand shake more like it. I used to shoot with 18-135mm and it was already very sharp leh...

Maybe this is the result of cheap glass vs L glass?

could be you need to go calibrate ur lens

50D even with lens kit only, also have capability to produce good result :)
make sure the focus point is pointed to the object what you want for and make sure your hand can balance the shutter speed ;) at least minimum 1/100s if your hand is not steady enough

Hi Bro & Sis,

Noted with many thnxs....

I do heard of calibrate of lense. Wanner will that help. Taught the new lense should be already calibrate before on the market.

Lastly i would like to know. Other than L lense, any recommanded lense that will provide sharp image though the above mention i had already follow the technique.

Thnxs

10-22mm for the wide angle lense which i am interested too. But wanner what will be the outcome like ( Shapness & Wide angle ). Will it feel like fish eye image when you adjust to 10mm?

Thnxs ;)

Ooh ya, i do interested in the canon 24-105mm L lense. Wanner it that worth to invest.

Thnxs

Would recommend that you send your body and 18-200IS to CSC for a calibration. The "before and after" make alot of different.

If you are going for tact-sharp image, I would recommend you go for a prime. In term of sharpness a very cheap 50F1.8 (stop down to F2.8) would be sharper than an expensive 24-70F2.8L. ;)

OT: On a crop this lens may not be as useful...
saw this lens IQ on crop body, still better than my tammy.

but if you going for range, 18-200mm is still better :)

I owned all the three lenses, in term of IQ (sharpness) you would often find a prime (when stop down to F2.8) perform better than a zoom (be it L or cheap zoom).

However till today, my Canon 18-200IS is still my fav lens (if I do not require F2.8) that I even kept a crop just for this lens. :bsmilie:

I do understand prime lense will give better result. The only thing is you will have to shift your position to position. And you will proberly change lense very frequent. :)

As for my Nikon D70s with Nikon 50mm 1.8 . If you take pix like close up, it will be gd. I try it for general photo, it won't feel gd. Maybe that is also my skill causes. ;(

Just wanner is there anything to do with the body setting for sharpness other than what kind of lense you are using. :)

Poor lighting conditions can also yield unflattering/dull images. If you want punchier shots out of the cam, you can always adjust saturation in your picture styles.

TS, you really need to do some stationary tests using a tripod to see if your lens is having focus issues.

As mentioned, it could be due to the settings on your camera also. Some of the pictures you posted seemed a little underexposed and that might contribute to the dullness..the plants don't look green and bright enough to me.

Also the natural lighting available is a big factor too. On a dull or hazy day, it will also produce some grey cast (my own experience) on the colours.

Therefore my conclusion is that first go calibrate your lens and shoot more...getting an expensive lens is not the only solution to obtaining sharper pictures and better colours.

To me maybe it is easier to do simple 1 - 2 min of post processing using softwares.

are you guys sure it is the lens and not the photographer that needs calibration? from almost all his shots, he is shooting way below the 1/(focal length * crop factor) rule of thumb. under such condition, he will be relying on is to recover from camera shakes.

I often use my zoom as prime, often I would shift myself (unless I have space constraint) instead of the zoom ring. For event shooting that require me to shoot at F2.8 or larger, I would use a two body, three lens option.

To me the lens is just a tool, whether or not it's a zoom or prime... light, composition, angle, etc... it's more important than any single lens itself.
