i wont bother so much...with 8 core and more just on the horizon.

Problem is expandability... doesn't offer e-SATA which may be amongst the more impt things for a photographer.

Which isn't that impressive if you are really dealing with large quantities of files, or high-res scans.

Hi bro havocidal - newbie here pls do explain:dunno:

firewire800 speeds are only at 70MB/s in actual usage, which is fine as a boot drive, but if you are dealing with very large files this becomes a problem. The biggest drawback of the iMac is expandability. It is basically a powerful unportable laptop. The Mac Pro on the other hand, offers expandability, not just in its RAM, but also internal HD, GFX card. That of course comes with a price.

But if you're looking for a value for money solution, the iMac 27" is a pretty good deal, considering it includes a 27" screen.

Thks bro for the insight:thumbsup: i should be looking fr a nle pc that work smoothly with cs4 & editing software:edius 5 + beeing a newbie - but beauti always side track me:angel:.
Bro havocidal would u be so kind as to give ur thought on my DiY nle pc as compared to iMac Quad 27" - for work flow:think:

Nothing... let me repeat... NOTHING beats a mac.

how about a hackintosh?

but i guess in this case.. TS only can go for a mac since he will be using FCP

yes if i go fr the iMac n ebay selling fcs much cheaper than here;p but again im just a hobbyist - still 'work flow' is important so my DiY or iMac - which gives better 'work flow' - its cheaper n faster frm my DiY but damn! mac is just so...but cost more:think: ok stay on the 'work flow'...

Just keep in mind, if you do also want to dabble in CS5 to be released this year, run your DIY on a 64bit system with 64bit Windows 7.

won't work on 32 bit OS anymore.

hey

the main prob i have with the new macs is the lack of FW400 cos most video decks use a FW400 output. so u have to get a convertor which costs about $30.

and also with the imac i believe all the USB slots are running off the same board which means if u plug in more then one it will slow down whatever you're working on. (not sure about this but i think thats the reason)

another prob is the screen, we got one with 1 dead pixel but after ringing Apple they said they will only do a swap if you get one with more then 5 dead pixels (wtf?)

that said
"once you go mac there ain't no going back"

jas

Most imacs no longer had to waste your usbs for the keyboard & mouse. Since both are now wireless using bluetooth. And most apple store now sells FW400 - 800 ADAPTER... No issues.
If your production are not those high intensive, having a imac with no expansion should not be a issue.
The spaces of all new imacs are from the range of 500GB - 1 TB which is more than enough. macs are 64bit compatible OS.

I don't find imacs as restrictive as to what some users says.... I had been using imacs for 3 yrs and it can fulfil any production i do. And it is not as slow as some says when you put more usb products.

It is up to your decisions.... What you prefer...

And what kind of throughput can we expect from eSATA?
70MBps can move one gigabyte in under 15s. Not fast enough for you?

However, I totally agree with your statement on the limited expandability of the iMac.
firewire800 speeds are only at 70MB/s in actual usage, which is fine as a boot drive, but if you are dealing with very large files this becomes a problem. So what else is new?
There's always something newer out there.

Unless, of course, you're saying they cost exactly the same, in which case, forget the quad-core.
i wont bother so much...with 8 core and more just on the horizon.
