How does this kit lens compare to the kit II lens for 550D 18-135mm EF-S?

18-135 has a longer reach than 18-55. As for IQ-wise, I'll leave it to someone who has used both lenses to advise.

Talking about the 18-55- I've been using it as my day to day lens on my camera, and we've been through ALOT. Up mountains, through rainforests, in the rain- yada yada. And its never failed me once. Whilst I do find it lacking in terms of IQ and low light capabilities (where it hunts to focus in low light conditions), for what its worth, its an excellent lens that performs way above its budget range. Build quality wise, whilst it may feel plasticky, boy does it take a punch. I've dropped mine a couple of times (to much anguish) and have had to use it in light rain- and its held up. I'm happy with mine, and I guess at the end of the day, its about breaking away from the mindset that kit lenses are meh
