Hi all, got a silly question here :embrass:

am planning to get Ikelite housing for new A640 cam. Read a review and heard from another user that the lens port actually blocks the camera's internal flash esp for macro shots.

Now, i'm not familiar with ikelite housings, lens ports or add-ons cos still newbie ma. Is it possible to remove the lens port if I'm not adding any lens at the moment? Cos this wld mean that a strobe is necessary and i'm not planning for one so soon. Have thought of DIY strobe wif another frn who's gonna do his but honestly, my skills are not at the level where i can work in manual mode and change strobe settings n think n still maintain my buoyancy.

Wld really appreciate it if someone can shed some light on this before i commit to an ikelite. Thanks! :D

no u cannot remove the lens port, it comes with a diffuser, which sort of brings ur flash to flush with the lens port, so its not actually blocked.

Sure u can remove it. Anything also can remove from Ikelite housing. But water will go in only lor

Jeli,

Did you try going to the Ikelite website to have a look at the housing? I think they usually show you the various views and you'd be able to see if your flash would be blocked. I don't think the P&S housings have removable ports but I could be mistaken. Maybe you might wanna consider getting a strobe to go along with the housing? Hehe!

yes you can remove the lens port but that would not guarantee if it floods after putting it back. (I'm joking..) The lens port is fixed. You do have to use the diffuser to bring the flash forward.

Again if that does not help, welcome to the world of perpetual upgrading and accessories.

wow, this was like such an age old thread I didn't think anyone wld be bothered to dig it out!
A few weeks after I posted this thread, I went to get myself a D2000S. No need to take out lens port, no need for whatever. In fact, am quite pleased with the strobe 'cos now I can get those fantastic black-background-with-illuminated-subjects pictures. Not to forget a shiny new piece of magnifying glass (yes Ivan, accessories!) to go with the Ikelite's threaded lens port.
Only thing now is to find a sponsor for my wide angle lens and upcoming trips cos am too broke to even go diving nw....

Oh yes, forgot to add. With or without any housing, the A640 itself aldy has a flash problem. It's own lens when extended will block its own flash when taking macro shots from a very short distance. Some of my friends got arnd this by taking their shots frm a distance away and zooming into the subject. After cropping you can't really see the diff anymore. I opted for the lazy and expensive way out.

problem is when you zoom in to shoot you lose depth of field

and if u move too far away you get backscatter and water.. :)

get at 1 more glass :)

wide angle is evil!!!
