The danger of overweening success

Water will overflow if poured until it reaches the brim.
As long as a knife is sharp enough, do not sharpen it any more.
If it is too sharp, it will break easily.

A person who has too many valuables arouses envy and attracts the attention of criminals.
This abundance of wealth will cause him to lead a dissolute life until at last all his wealth is squandered away.

To be successful in life one has to be upright. This fits into law of nature.
It’s just like creation, in which you find all the living things. Creation is without selfish motives; it is wholesome and quietly accomplished.

Entrust the world to the selfless person

People of the world take reputation and gain too seriously so much so that both praise and insult will cause them to become agitated.

Living a frightened existence because of the fear of disasters. Why?
In the eyes of people, high station is considered noble; it makes them feel a cut above others. Therefore there is fear that losing it will bring distress.

Insults are considered lowly. One feels ashamed when being insulted. So people are afraid of being insulted and humiliated.
We have big troubles because we are always thinking in terms of self-interest.

If you have no ego, will you suffer calamities?

Thus if a person is selfless, the world may be entrusted to his care.

Man must be unselfish and selfless. If man can put aside the thoughts of life and death, all insults and favours will not move him and fear will not exist.

The preservation of life

About one-third of the people can live a long life.
About one-third of the people die young.
Those who can live a long life but die prematurely through their own faults also make up about one-third.

Why is this so?
Because they are treated too well and they over-indulge in enjoyment.

It is said that a person who know how to safeguard his life would never be attacked by rhinoceroses and tigers while they walking in the deep jungle.
In war, he would not be wounded by weapons.

A rhinoceros may be fierce, but it is unable to use its horns on him.
A tiger may be fierce and strong, but it cannot put its claws on him.
They may have the sharpest weapons, but the soldiers are not able to use these weapons to harm him.

What are the reasons?!
Because a person who knows how to live a proper life would never go a place where he is risk of being killed.

In our daily life, there are uncountable agents of destruction, such as sexual temptation, the lure of money, squandering of wealth, debauchery, and other evil deeds. If we are not cautious even for a moment, disaster will befall us. If we can maintain a calm and steady mind, behave properly and carefully and do not compete to be the winner, no harm will befall us.

The function of keeping low

The sea can become the king of a hundred streams, making them flow into it because it manages to stay in a low position.
So if the sage wants to be the leader of the people, he must be most humble towards them. To set a good example, he must put the welfare of the others above self-interest.
So when the sage occupies the top position, people do not feel his weight; when he stays in front, people do not feel threatened. So people are glad to support him wholeheartedly.

Because he does not compete with others, nobody in the world can compete with him.
If a ruler misuses his power and acts wrongly and uncontrollably, the people will suffer tremendously. Therefore he must avoid bringing burdens and harm to his subjects.

I think the definition of "having a job" here is to be engaged in (ideally licit) activities in exchange for bread and butter for the table. Does being an NSman let you do that? I don't think so.

i'm an engineer mainly in machine servicing and maintainance. every month we, that is me and my team mates need to submit a report, or in the other way a report is generated to my boss on how many machines we had serviced over at our customer's place and how long it last after the maintainance service till the next time the machine is down again. the cost of each engineer had spent per month on the spare parts which need to replace into the machine. so who ever do the most machine, spend the less and the call back rate is low will be awarded......and who ever did the worst will be questioned and blamed....especially cost is concern......so nowaday, everyone in the team work just for himself.......selfishness......a kind of 'you die better than i die' attitude........why?......becos there is competition.......good?.........i'm getting sick of it............................ :thumbsd: :thumbsd: :thumbsd:

unfortunately in today's society, people including bosses are impatient to get things done quickly. The perception is that a professional can do a better job then an artisan in-house. So why bother compete, well here is the conundrum, if you don't continually seek to self improve and innovate, then yes someone outside WILL do a better job than you, simply because they have more exposure. The other angle is on looking at the value chain, how much more can you do compared to your counterparts. If you find the answer to that, then I am quite certain you shall remain as an invaluable employee. But then if that recognition self to materialize, then why bother compete, go outside and provide your skills to society at large, they tend to be more open-minded that people from outside are better than one of their own....
