The dive master in Redang referred to this as devil fish but a quick check on google points "devil fish" to rays instead. So I was hoping someone would provide the more widely used name.
Commonly called Devil Stinger..... They are kind of 'cute' looking when they WALK with those spiny legs of theirs.... which of course, are mod fins :bsmilie:
It looks very much like the Caledonian stinger (Inimicus caledonicus), which is supposed to occur from the Andaman Sea to Australia and New Caledonia. Devil scorpionfish (from what I can find on fishbase), refers to another type of scorpionfish.

Devil Stinger is just a common name...... much like 'Clown Fish' is used to refer to almost all type of Anemonefish (aka Nemo) :bsmilie:
I would think this look more like Spiny Devilfish (Inimicus didactylus).... as they are also found from Thailand and S.E China to Indonesia, Aust, New Caledonia and Vanuatu.... Redang, I believed is on South China Sea side....
But till we have more photos showing the sides of the fish..... really hard to tell. As both Spiny Devilfish & Caledonia. Devil scorpionfish are said to be very similar to each other.
