IBM 1GB Micro Drive w/PC Card Adapter & Free USB CF Type 1 & Type 2 Reader S$ 449.00

Is this a good buy?

Any better price than this?

$380 @ Alan Photo with Adapter, no free gift.

HardwarePlace SLS4th floor is selling it for $375 with adaptor.

Darn! I got fleeced by Alan Photo.

1) I walked into AP, was quoted $440 for 1GB MD
2) Tried to bargain, but salesman refuse to budge, saying that the MD came with free PCMIA Adaptor
3) Decided to walk around to have a look
4) Most shops were closed or didn't sell MD so decided to go back to Alan Photo, this time round was quoted $400 by another salesman.
5) Thought it was a good deal and decide to buy it
6) I asked for warranty, only to be told by the salesman that warranty's inside the package
7) Went home only to realise that warranty's didn't carry AP shop stamp, which was required for the warranty to take effect.

Darn!

I got my 602 from AP and I tried to get a microdrive from them.
Was pretty pissed when they insisted on $400 and refused to budge.

Went straight upstairs and got it from HardwarePlace for $375. Another good place is Storage Studio $375-379.

These 2 will give you proper warranty cards and all, they've been dealing in IBM HDDs for a while.

Hm.
With so many threads about AP fleecing their customers with regards to price, this definitely deters newbies from me to patronize their store..

Guess I rather pay $5 more to go to CP to get my lenses. :D

yeah I always go to CP, at least u can be assured of their prices, good service and 100% customer satisfaction!

wow ... thanks to all who responded ... I thought lowest price was around $39x not so long ago ... now $37x? any more lower price? how abt MS Color?

hmmm ... decision time ... 1G microdrive or 256M CF ...

i read many old post still can't really decide to go for another 256MB CF or 1GB MD...

saw the writing speed of MD is slower, but how slow it is? any more help pls?

One guy mentioned that he bought his for $360 without adaptor in a recent thread.

Apart from slower startup and playback, I don't feel any tangible difference while shooting.

Its best to get it with the adaptor. You never know when you will need it. Its not easy to find one (for IBM MD) when you really need it urgently.

Something that you may want to take note : IBM MD sucks battery power more faster than the normal type 1 CF card. :)

As a point of reference, I shot 360+ shots over 3 days during a tour at 6MP fine settings.(File size influences power consumption as well.) while expending 2 sets of Sanyo 1850mAh batteries.

Works out to >180shots per set of batteries and this includes 30% shots with flash and passing the camera around to friends for playback.

Should be quite acceptable to most. It helps that the 602 is one of the less power hungry cameras around. For users of other cameras your mileage may vary.:)

do you do a lot of playback? one set of batteries is usually enough to last me more than 250 pics (3MP normal or fine) using CF.

For that trip...yes as a few friends wanted to review all the pictures I took. Perhaps went through 100+ picts about 5 times.

I don't shoot that much nowadays about 100+ shots per session...not enough to expend the batteries fully so I can't really tell how much is the upper limit if playback isn't used.

Also bear in mind that you are shooting in 3MP all the time, while I shoot in 6MP...should have some bearing on the battery consumption.

In any case, you could just take mine as a guide, since you will definitely be tempted to just use 6MP when you are using a microdrive.:)

definitely. I wanted to get the microdrive so that I could shoot 6MP, fine all the time ;p but I guess this have to wait.... hard to justify now when I'm in debt ;p

Heh...so am I!;)

according to what Zerstorer said, seem like it's quite a good choice for MD, just wonder, when u all take in 6MP, wat is the purpose? for larger size printing or just for personal satisfication? ;)

Just take it that I'm neurotic about archival quality. I want to be able to print in A3 and above if needed in future and if it means 6MP then so be it!;p I've even considering shooting in TIFF when cycle times are not crucial.(still life/macros..etc);)

Anyway one thing to note is that shooting in 6MP/fine/soft means that you will always have to post process each shot carefully before they are even fit for display.
