i just got my K-x!

I'm also new to DSLR.
Have been aiming the Canon 500D or used 450D but after reading the K-X threads find that pentax is more worthwhile...
Just below $1k can get a dslr /w 2 kit lens, very value for $$$

If I were to get the $899 dual kit lens bundle, what else do I need? I already have charger + eneloop & sd card.
Camera bag & Dry Box?

Hi, and welcome. Good choice you are making, you won't regret it :)
Yes, a camera bag is a good idea, but you should probably go for an electric Dry Cabinet instead of a Dry Box. Will cost quite a bit more, but will be worth it to keep the humidity at the correct level without worrying about it being too dry or eventually being not dry enough in a Dry Box.

Hi all ,

I am planning to buy the KX. but just trying to convince myself towards it against the CANON 500D.

My questions :

if i buy the pentax for the body plus lenses. where do you people buy the rest of the accessories. Like bag,dry bag, tripod ?

If i go towards the 500D , it include all the stuff.

The freebies as mentioned by others are generally not very good. Once you start using them you will find their limitations.
1. Memory card - usually small capacity and slow speed. Anyway a good 4GB Class4 is only ~$15.
2. Bag - Not enough capacity, not too comfortable.
3. Tripod - small, light flimsy
These are just limitations of course, and you may feel 'ok' with them. Just that many CSers have not and have sold then in BnS or have them sitting at home.

oh then i think i almost know where i am going !!!! PENTAX.
I am a newbie who is first time buying the DSLR.
I just need to convince my wife that PENTAX is worth as she is also sway much towards CANON
May i know where is the more common place to get all these accessories.

Common places would be OP, MSColor, CP, DSLR Revolution. BnS here is pretty good. Else there is always resourceful Pentaxians here you can check with and ebay of course.

Camera bag & Dry Box?

The Kx is not just cheaper. Its better!
On-body SR, HDR function, better high ISO noise reduction for JPEG. For the same price point, it blows the competition away (for now at least) :)

Thanks for the reply.
How much would an electric Dry Cabinet cost? No need too big, just sufficient keeping the K-X +dual kit lens & perhaps an additional 1 or 2 lens next time.
Any brand recooemnded for the camera bag assuming I just need to hold the cam + 2 lenses?

Yes, the FPS is also faster than the competitions of the same class.
The only downside is the smaller size LCD with only 230k colors.
Also don't really like AA batteries but for a set of eneloop can last for about 1000 shots is really amazing.

for dry cabinet, i think 35 litre is smallest....... should be good enough unless you go bananas buying big zoom lenses.

if you keep to pentax primes shouldnt' be a problem!!!!!!! :bsmilie: i can't remember cost, around $100?

for bags, got big range of brands available, the common ones are lowepro, tamrac, kata.

some of the more premium brands include billingham, think tank, domke.

each of them have like, different pricing, and different appearances etc.

About $100 is fine, think should be able to store my LX3 as well.;)
I hope the bags are not that expensive... $30-$40?

for that price range, better to keep to the more common brands, like lowepro, kata, tamrac

for a basic bag holding dslr + 2 lenses, it should be within your budget.

if you ever decide to invest in a billingham.................. :bsmilie: i think you should find it most worth it.. or a domke. but i haven't used a domke before.. that one you have to ask creampuff. he's used both!

Yeah, I've heard of lowpro. Think I bought one small one yrs ago for my compact Canon A80.
Billingham? I suppose it's expensive?

Do I need to purchase something called hood or UV filters for both the lenses?

i think your lenses should come with a hood.

billingham website with online shop here:
http://www.billingham.co.uk/pages/index.php

singapore prices a bit higher than that, i think.. but you can see the look of the bag.. sorry if you get poisoned.

anyways.. uv filter is optional, people usually only put it for protecting the front element.. i can see the justification for an expensive lens, but no one ever puts it on their p&s camera.. and it does things like cause ghosting (google for this) at night.

but if you want, you can always buy. i have no uv filters for any of my lenses. :)

The billingham bag looks good but the prices
If UV filters is not neccessary then I can save some $$ :D

Same here! The only filters I end up using on my lenses occasionally are polarizers and neutral density filters.

I do possess UV filters... but they are only for those rare occasions when I need to shoot in extremely dusty or moist environments.

Apparently there's no DAL 50-200 lens for the dual lens kit bundle.
I was offered the DA 50-200 with $20 topup, is it okay?

Where were you at?
It means they are out of stock of the 50-200mm dual lens kit. If you can't wait for stocks to arrive or to check another shop for stocks, then the $20 topup isn't too bad of a deal. I believe the non-L has some slight advantages over the L (quick shift? comes with a hood? not 100% sure maybe someone else can clarify)

The DA 50-200 have quick shift, comes with a hood and have a metal mount also.
