I can only bring one lens to Japan so which one?

well 17-55 and 24-105, i will stick to 24-105 because also not much diff from the 17 and 24, the most just move back more, but watch your step haha
best is the 10-22 + 24 105, 10-22 for fireworks and 24-105 for every other thing
There is quite a large difference from 17mm to 24mm. After considering crop factor, it's 28.8mm to 38.4mm - a huge difference if you ask me. On the wide end, every millimeter makes a huge difference.
Yes, if you dun mind to bring 2 lens. BUt if you lazy to change lens or you only have one choice that will be.. 17-55
By the way, you going on tour or backpack/drive? this is one of the issue as well to consider the weight.

Agree. Shooting in old shophouses, back alleys, City building areas with 24mm lens (1.6X) is practically often unusable.
More or less yeap, the Canon 10-22mm, kit lens (18-55mm), 70-200mm F4 L + 50mm f/1.8 , no external flash, and no tripod.
looking at it now, would I bring a tripod? for my purpose, nope, there was no need for it.
But I must admit, it was quite heavy to carry them around, but looking at the bright side, I manage to loss some of my body weight! hahaha

I am going on my own with my wife for 10 days. No way you can drive at Tokyo. I will be going there every year.

Which is why my original quote... you have not tried it yet to really comprehend it.
Try walking around a city with 6-7kg on your back. To be more specific, try doing 4-5 hours worth of walking in a big city that does not have too many 'safe' places to sit down and you're cramped for time. And to be even more quantitative, try 10-12km worth of walking with such a load on your back in that time frame (excluding photo stops). Every bit counts, down to as little as 50g in fact.
Now imagine walking in a really, really hilly city like San Francisco or you're venturing into some of the most scenic tourist areas in the world that is even more hilly and undulating like Yellowstone National Park or Mount Wudang or HuangShan in China.. In some of these situations, every gram counts! In fact at extreme altitudes (over 12,000 ft), unless you're well acclimatised, every step can be a laborious effort regardless of payload carried!

so yes, 600g.Just came back from Thailand and I am so happy with my purchase of the 17-55mm before I went for the trip. It's definitely worth the money especially during Loy Krathong festival and the Thai King's sister funeral procession. There was a lot of low-light shooting involved and the 17-55mm was definitely up to the task! It was also my 1st time carrying both a 17-55mm & a 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM lens and they are not too heavy.

Which is precisely what I mean ! If you're carrying so much stuff, it makes the whole trip that much less enjoyable and that much more difficult to take pictures!
And I think I see an error there... The EX430 with batteries is more than 0.3kg ! :bsmilie:
Generic Tripod ? You mean the free one from Canon ? Its about 1.1-1.2 kg. Also, you should have left your laptop locked up together in your main luggage case. No point bringing it around.
