Yes, my vote would be 17-55
I can only bring one lens to Japan so which one?

Weird that you have all the good stuff, but you're only going to bring one.

If you're only going to bring one lens, then it has to be 17-55mm lens.
If you're using a FF, then a 1 lens solution would be the 24-105mm instead.
I was in a similar quandary last year, with a 17-50mm and a 70-200mm. Brought both along for a 16-day trip. Ended up using the 70-200mm for all of 10% of my shots. Those, being specific, deliberate rather than spontaneous shots.
This year, I brought 3 lenses along. 12-24mm, 17-50mm and 85mm and a 1.4x convertor.
Ended up, the 85mm accounted for about 2-3% of my over 2000 shots taken! the 12-24 about 50% and the 17-50mm another 45-47%.
So, in my experience, go with the wider options available. You'll tend to use it more.

Its not that i do not want to bring all the lenses. As a photographer, you would want to bring all your gears especially when you are travelling so as not to miss any shots.
But sometimes, you will be in a situation when you are not able to bring all the gears that you need.
If really no choice then i will either bring the 10-22 and the 24-105 combination or the 17-55 & 70-200 F4 IS combination which i hope either one will covers most of the things to shoot in japan.

Yes, understand that. Which is why most people suggest just take the 17-55mm. It will do just fine. The 24-105 just does not cut it when you want to shoot indoors on a crop body. Most of the time it'll be a little too long.
As for the 17-85 IS ? Well, no point. That extra 30mm has little consequence in practical use as it can be compensated with a few steps here and there for 99% of the possible uses for that extra reach.
It also really depends on what you want to shoot. If you're just doing "walkabout" shooting, the 17-55 is about perfect. IF you're slanting towards landscapes and scenery in general, the 10-22 will be useful. If you like taking candid portraits of people and their lives, the 70-200 would be the most useful. I'm sure you have in mind the 'main' form of shooting you want to do. Just go along that line. The other lenses if you bring along are simply to supplement the additional areas of secondary priority.
At the end of the day, the different lenses recommended here only serve to show how diversified everyone's shooting style will be. You have to make the ultimate decision in which lens you are most comfortable with. See, when you are there, with that one chosen lens, no one here giving you suggestions is going to be doing the phototaking; you are.
Learning how to make a decision on what gear to bring is a very important skill that you must pick up, and fast too, because ultimately, you are in control of what you shoot, and your style will reflect on the equipment you chose.
My take on the matter would be the 17-55, if it really has to be one lens.

bring your 17-55 for general walk about lens.
since you bring ur tripod along, you can also bring an additional 10-22 for scenery or landscape shoot.......10-22 goes very well to shoot sharp landscape photo with the help of a tripod.
i myself facing the similar issue too, but for me i am trying to bring my 17-55 and 70-200f2.8L......haha, dun laugh at me, i know 70200f2.8 is a additional piece of metal in my bag, but come to think that if i am able to catch some good pix with such heavy lens then why not?

Haha you are not the only one. I brought both my 24-70mm and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS to Japan. It was kinda heavy but no regrets at all....

No point getting a new 17-85mm and I agree with KangS that 30mm won't make any difference. On the other hand the f2.8 of 17-55 is certainly great for the indoor

But if it is possible, just bring all your lens( except the 24-105mm L) and leave the tripod .... why?

yes......i am going to taiwan this time hope i can get to meet taiwanese geisha lady the "ping lang mei" haha ......
anyway maybe bro TS should really consider bring some more lens....because it is a holiday and is once a life time thing, and we will really lost out in those shots that required such len and yet unavailable, i am sure one will really be very upsad about......but if you go Japan as frequent then i think 1 len speak all already......
just my simple thoughts because i only bring a small 28-105 II USM to korea for my honeymoon trip, i lost out all landscape and winter snowing shots....

I just back from Osaka and Kyoto last month. I was regret that do not have 24-105L for street potrait shot...
But i'm happy with my 10-22 and 17-55.... due to the weight....
But luckily I din bring 70-200 f4.. if not sure i will lost my two legs.....walk too much

You'll have 16 - 168mm equivalent a focal range with a small gap inbetween. Why not? Just for the sake of weight?
