Hyperfocal distance GF1 firmware 1.1

Actually these are good Qs & provokes thinking abt other factors. Exposure is a function of shutter speed & aperture, and indirectly ISO capability. Hyperfocal distance only deals with Aperture. so we still need to fig out how to handle the shutter piece. that's what sets us photographers apart from P&S folks.

Of course, there are limitations to hyperfocal distance depending on lens and min Aperture like what is pointed out in item 1. and when (circumstances) yr cam cant cut it like in item 2, 3 or when its not suitable to use hyperfocal distance like in 4. so it all good thought provoking points to hlp us consider a variety of situations when can/cannot use this feature.

Actually, Hyperfocal distance deals with 3 factors, circle of confusion (which you can't control unless you switch cameras), focal length and aperture. Hyperfocusing has not much to do with the lens or exposure as it is not bothered by shutter speed nor ISO. We as the photographer have to handle the exposure by balancing ISO and shuttIer speed, if we are set on an aperture.

I think you misunderstood my post. In scenarios 1-4, those are the situations where using hyperfocal distance will solve your problems.

And it is not a feature. It is just physics.

Great! But will it be available if we upgrade to latest firmware 1.2?
Does it work on other lenses too?

What I meant was, that this hyperfocal thing is not meant to be a feature. If it is a feature, Panasonic would have advertised it. And they would have added a button, or a menu selection for you to set to hyperfocal distance, and not requiring the user to turn the camera on and off every time they select a different aperture.

agreed on your point that its not a intended feature. anyway, if the hyperfocal position was indeed part of the process to achieve fast AF speed, i doubt panny would document it for their partners and competitiors since its AF speed a major selling point of the G series.

I read an article somewhere, I don't remember which one, that this would be a great feature that manufacturers can include in the camera in-built software, similar to the DOF button in old cameras or leaf shutter lenses like the Hasselblad's. Then we don't need to guess or calculate ourselves. Would be a useful feature.

i agree.

would be great if they could even have a dedicated button just to make it go to the right point.

after all, if the gf1 has it loaded somewhere inside its body, i'm sure any other manufacturer could do it easily if they wanted to!

It could be m43 standard, due to CDAF ? or it's m43 lens specific, I don't know, but if you see my post #10, it happen on E-P1 as well.

I'm still on firmware 1.1, so will appreciated those with 1.2's feedback.

it should work with all lenses.

Does anyone have a technique to set the hyperfocal distance on the Oly PENs using lenses without focusing scale? Thanks. ;)
