I'm not sure If I missed something. Does the in-built flash on 7D supports HSS ? The same goes to 5400HS. Thought 5400 displays HSS mode the camera always defaults to max sync speed when the flash turned on. Is 7D support HSS only on 5600 / 3600 ?

Hiee..

From my understanding the 5400 is not 100% comaptible with the 7D.
Only the 5600HS & the 3600HS is...

Probabaly due to the preflash refreshing for the flash to take the shot, that may have introsuced
some limitations to allow the 5400 in achieving the higher speeds sync on the 7D.

5400HS is not compatible with 7D. The only way you can use it is in Manual mode.

Only 5600HS and 3600HS...

If you buying one, skip the 3600HS... but the 5600HS instead.

The only thing that works on 5400HS with 7D is zooming
Can I just tape the contact pins of 5400HS ( must leave one that triggers the flash).
Then I might be able to control both 7D and 5400 fully manually  Can ?
Then which are the pins to tape.

This is what I'm doing with my Canon Pro90is and non dedicated flashes, yes Pro90 doesn't
have a mechanical shutter so high speed no problem.

You don't have to tape it...

all you need to do is shoot with "M" mode on your 7D and set your 5400HS to Manual mode...

Its not that bad actually... as long as you know what is your working distance, you can work "in or out" of the zone, you will have perfect exposure...

Sometime I do that with my 7D + 5600HS when the venue has constant lighting... iso 400 1/60sec f5.6 and set flash on 1/16 power, no lazy eye syndrome, constant exposure....

Hart, does that mean u shift forwards or backwards from the subject to vary the camera-subject distance till u get the perfect exposure? But u need a pretty high power zoom lens to cover all the eventualities?

Hi Hart I'm always using 7D in "M" mode with 5400HS - manual power ratio. That works
fine as long the shutter speed is less than max sync speed. My problem is how to
get shutter speed beyond 1/160 sec. I need it especially when shooting outdoors.

Yes I use similar setting F5.6 , 1/60, ISO 200 / 400 bounce off ceilling - beautifull result :)

thanks.

Your 7D is compatible with HSS flash system like the 56/3600 HS(D) flash. But your built-in flash is not.

Thanks da, my question now how to have full manual control over shutter speed (beyond 1/160 sec ) when a 5400HS mounted on 7D. Anyone tried it before ?

Is it possible to use HSS on the 5400 and the 7D? If not u dun have a ghost of chance to fire the flash at shutter speeds higher than the max flash sync speed.

Yeah, like TME said, dont think the HSS will work for a 5400 on a 7D. It has been specifically mentioned, only 5600 HS(D) and 3600 HS(D) is compatible with a 7d/5d. ;)

:o:(

Caussway,

I m afraid you cant. HSS only applies to those dang KM flash that has it explicitly stated. :D

If I use those non-TTL auto-flash am still limited to 1/160 ?

What is a non-TTL flash? If it does not exchange info with the body and is triggered as a slave then u can only go on manual mode...
