Just to add on, although I'm also a newbie to photography, but my friend advice me to get UV filter to protect the front element. Should the lens gets scratches, only the filter gets scratch and replacing the filter is far cheaper thatn the front element of the lens. Just my 2cents.

My recommendation for your coolpix 3700

1. Buy a dry box .. abt $20
2. Buy basic cleaning kit .. blower, kodak cleaning tissue and brush etc.
3. Silica gel ... use a portion and when it turns pink recommend to discard.

Depending on how is your usage .. once stored inside the dry box it will be good to take out every 3 mths if not in use for a period. So there is actually no harsh and fast rule about maintaining it.

Clean the LCD and use blower to blow away the dust of the lens.

Enjoys your shooting ... :)

DON'T USE THIRSTY HIPPO!

I heard of people using Thirsty Hippo ,the external of their lens starts to peel off.

All you need is just a lens cloth. Those oranged-colored anti-static cloth, just for wipping dust away on the lens. :)

The blower is a hand pump like this:

Basically all you'll need it to head down to CP in Peninsular or Marina Square and as them for a lens pen and a blower. Both should cost you around $20. The lens pen is a pen-shaped instrument with a soft brush on one end and a felt-like cleaning tip on the other. You first blow off dust and sand etc from the lenses using the blower, then gently brush off the lens followed by cleaning the lens with the lens pen. Just ask the sales staff to teach you how to do it ;)
