How to get audio out from a audio mixer

Hey guys,

Iam having a slight issue for a upcoming wedding video shoot.

Its going to be a church wedding, so I've gotten a Zoom H4n so I can record the audio off their mics when they are reading their vows.

Problem now is, the church audio guy (whois a volunteer for the wedding. The church doesnt seem to have a fix staff for the audio), keeps telling me that there is no audio output that I can jack into.

I don't know much about this big audio mixers, but I saw the setup at the church, and I can safely say its a pretty damn pro setup.

And I really don't buy it, that I cant get a single audio out that I can plug into.

Was wondering do you guys have experience in this, maybe on the day itself I can own self look out for the audio out to jack into.

When u see the mixer board use the 1/4" jack Group Out or AUX OUT. Check on the H4n headphone jack that u are receiving the signal.

hey mnjohar thanks for the help man.

btw for the aux out is there more then one?. Because Iam not sure if I will run into any issue, the audio guy telling me if I use the aux out, he cant use the aux out.

Also on a separate question, regarding 1/4" cable. I actually have one that I used for my guitar last time. Will it work with mics?

Whether there are more than 1 AUX OUT depends on the mixer. You have to see it for yourself.

The h4n takes both 1/4" and XLR so your guitar cable is fine.

If it's a pretty large board (many channels), chances are it'll definitely have a few aux outputs.

FYI, make sure you're running off batteries. Using the AC adapter introduces possibility of humming.
At the last wedding I was at, the soundguy strongly recommended having a DI or attenuator to balance the levels off the board...

Thanks for the tips guys, appreciate it

Every church has different arrangements so got to be there early to test it live.

I've gone thru some with alot of white noise, some church, the AV guy like to adjust the levels constantly until your recording is unbalanced. Some have extremely loud input from the 'choir' and they refuse to change the levels due to their 'standardize practice'. So u have to choose to record completely useless audio during choir and good speeches or the other way. If u have the luxury of an extra man to monitor sound live, might be able to save it.

Simply, it's all different so have to adapt fast and bring all types of connections regardless 1/4 inch or xlr.

Went to the church over the weekend checked the mixer, there seems to be a aux out and mono out .

The audio guy kept claiming there's no way to output the audio to my recorder. ( haven't got to meet him face to face) .

Iam not sure how shld I go about this on the day, argue with him or just let it go.

possible to get permission from whoever is responsible, to do a quick test and see everything works as it should?

work something out with the audio guys for their time... coffee/ciggies/whatever :D
