How to convince Average Joe that Sony's DSLRs are actually quite good?

i would have to agree that the sony cams are of good quality (functions wise and built). However, i would need 2 more criteria before i would buy them:

a) I want their prices to be on par with that of canon and nikon
b) I want their camera bodies to stop looking like lego bricks - square-ish and blocked like. Sony is famous for their sleek sibei chio designs, i m sure they can come up with dslr that are more sexalicious curvy.

a) They actually are... just not in SG. :(

b) Chio is subjective... i'm happy my A700 looks "manly". :bsmilie:

its nice, nice to hold, nice touch, even though i molest it only twice

actually sony is best in their PnS. super macro modes etc... good exposures etc... very good.

I find that good features for entry level package, with competitive price is the most important. Once get hooked and no strong reason to switch, will stay in the camp all the life time.
Can see that the recent A350 launch is a success. If the entry level price can be even lower, many people's struggle will be solved.

frankly, their entry level cam prices are already very reasonable....for dslr with their level of technology, its reasonable....But, their lens prices are way too high... even if in overseas, their lens prices are cheaper, but still higher than canon and nikon equivalents..

Nope. That's a myth that's been debunked over and over again. Camp-to-camp comparisons show that many of the Sony lenses are even cheaper than the C and N equivalents abroad.

I don't know about u bro but i hope not many people are jumping onto the sony bandwagon.
Don't get me wrong.
I like sony but i don't like walking out the streets and everywhere i turn,i see an Alpha...
It loses it's uniqness

I say, those C or N users who already bought thousand of dollars into those systems can't be bothered about what Sony invest\invents\introduce in the DSLR world(actually they do, but it's the denial thingie ).

Only time will tell but as a matter of now, SONY products works. Will they survive and thrives like C or N, maybe but again time will tell.

I guess users looking for a DSLR needs to be assured their product macnufacturer don't abandon them when they go bust or bye-bye. And Sony makes almost everything in the electronic gadgetry world, so they are no whims.

C or N users might not want to know that fact - it hurts knowing a giant is stirring up in their C/N world.

BUT, personally apart from Sony taking over KM photo division, which itself assures me of the A-mount system continuity for my old KM 5D and lenses - AS or SSS and DRO is a major factor I choose A700 and to continue with the system.

Yes - future SONY DSLR users - SSS and DRO is one reason to go Sony. These are built-in tools for the Average Joe to have more image which are keepers. Also save the pocket, unlike C/N users with their IS or VR lenses, which are more ex as compare to non - VR/IS lenses.

For the Average Joe...ppssssst - Sony makes digital sensors for the some of the other brands DSLR.

Lens prices are too high in SG. Dont talk about overseas as the average joe dont do lens shopping overseas, they do it at CP, J316 or TK.

Design, individual preferences. Most dont really prefer the "manly" look. As usual YMMV. Personal, the first Alpha felt like a toy to me and the A700 is a block.

Friends, the average joe has friends that uses either Canon and Nikon. More persuasion from them, got people that can teach them to use the cam. Might be able to share lenses as well.

Tell Joe that Sony is No2 Cam sales in the world, only after Canon. (That however includes P&S sales :bsmilie:)

Secondly, it really depends on Sony how competitive they want to be in the market (think PS3 vs XBOX or HD-DVD vs BR-DVD). But their focus aren't on DSLRs for the near future as they might generate more profit in sensor sales to other menufacturers.

Lend average joe here your A700 and lenses a week to try out and make comparisons perhaps

right, yet subjective. i walk around the streets and everywhere i turn, i see an C or N.
yes C & N have a huge, infact, very huge market in dslr.
but i see sony as minolta. when i see alpha, it only reminds me of minolta, 2nd in mind is sony eventhough the fact that sony has taken over minolta's photography business.
sony takes over minolta history and built on it, eventhough i mentioned sony/alpha, it only came to me of minolta/alpha.
alpha alpha, its the name sony took and retained from minolta.

sometimes, comparison is bias. even one says he is unbiased, there is still a way or another which affects the conclusion.

True. One man's meat is another man's poison.

For me staying with Sony means:
PROS:
- inbuilt SSS that is getting better
- usable high ISO (latest version 3)
- usability of cheap and good Minolta lenses
- easy to use wireless flash
- promise of Sony taking DSLR to new levels previously led by C/N
- faith that Sony will fight the DSLR fight cos they can do it very well and have the resources to do so
- that Sony takes action on the feedback given by consumers
- overall positive reviews by independent parties and seen as an upcoming DSLR brand

CONS:
- expensive Sony lenses even when SSS is in the body
- lesser brand recognition as a professional equipment compared to C/N
- inability to turn off Hi ISO NR
- flash system could be more accurate

I think Sony will become very competitive in the DSLR market -specially with the influx of new Alpha models as well as new lenses (hope the price in SG go down though) but well Minolta lenses are available too.

sidetrack - PS3 vs XBOX / HD-DVD vzs Blu-ray? Well, from there we may see a good future for the PS3 as it uses Blu- Ray and Blu-Ray already beat(?) HD-DVD.

So to relate to DSLR, it maybe good for Sony's Built-In SSS and DRO..etc. Well, Sony is really good technologically and it may not be difficult to break into this market.

So how? What would be the major factor(s) that could win over average Joe to the Sony camp?[/QUOTE]

Hmm, I am not sure what you mean. Do you mean people who are mentally challenged with alot of money to spend? Or Equipment masturbators who want the latest gadgets to show off or what?

People usually chose their camera equiptment based on alot of factors, the main one is price and quality, reviews, features, etc,etc.... the list goes on.
If the question is coming from the salesman point of view.. good luck to you... I am sure you will come across "an Average Joe"(whatever it means...)

The brand mentioned is a popular brand but that does not mean its the best. Nothing is perfect, we buy what we think is best and good.

I apologise if I offend anyone here. But my stand is that no one is "an average Joe", everyone is unique and special in their own way.

You seem to be a bit put off by the term. Does it offend you?

It simply means photography non-enthusiasts or new enthusiasts who never owned a DSLR before and are looking to invest into a system.

Yes, everyone is unique. But to me, you're just a face in the crowd. (As I would be to you)

quite right. but minolta lenses are also getting slightly more expensive too compared to last time due to the fact when sony officially took over and a100 was out. but still there are cheap and good minolta lenses.

i think until a900 is out, sony is still staying in a waiting list. all lies on sony to see what their new higher end model will be and put sony in which DSLR market position

I was the "Average Joe" back then when my first DSLR is the KM 5D! b4 that was 2 PNS digicam and way b4 that was 1 other film PnS.

Didn't know back then of what to get BUT the AS thingie interest me. Remembered those times when I missed out on a lot of shots due to camera shake and slow image recording. I could have gone C as some of my friends has 350D and D30 or N as my other friends had D70,D200 and D2X. Not to mention readily available lenses to borrow/rent.

But the Average Joe in me chose the Alpha mount for the AS thingie...and so it goes.

My 50mm f1.7 lens have VR/IS or whatever they called it. So are all my other lenses...;)
