how to bounce light?

Hi,

I'll be helping a friend to take his rom photos tomorrow. Is the ceiling high enough to bounce the lights? Or is it advisable to use a white flash card with flash tilt to 75% or 90%

I once did a rom casual shoot for a classmate...
I can't remember clearly, but i believe the ceiling is quite high,
not sure if you can bounce the light from such a distance, and the ceiling also seems to be tinted.. so u got to be a little careful there...

a bounce card is a safer way i guess, no harm bringing 1 in any case

Inside the solemnization room you can use ceiling bounce, outside waiting area, some part of the ceiling are too high for light bounce, lookup to check before you shoot, if you are using bounce card, with tilted flash head, the height of the ceiling is not an issue.

Bounce light consumes more battery power, remember to bring more batteries.

Enjoy your shoot.

For outside the room where the ceiling is very high and for outdoor shots, tilt the flash 75 degree with flash card. Pls correct me, thanks alot.

wow, there's so much diff to the pic with external flash :thumbsup:

Finally, my problem of always having background underexposed is solved....

But i noticed that by using omnibounce and the flash directly facing the subject doesn't turns out to be good. I yield better result without the omnibounce and bounce it thru the ceiling.... :sweat:

Just bought the white giant cardboard from popular....yet to try out.... :lovegrin: I'm very satisfied wif the flash bouncing off the ceiling.....Thanks mate for all ur advise....

Technically, whether you use an external flash or not doesn't determine how your background is correctly exposed or not. Your flash, in-built or external should give you the correct exposure for your subject only. Background exposure is dependent on ambient lighting, so you should be using shutter speed and ISO to control it better.

i guess its more or less about there, but there's no hard and fast rule here, when u go into the room, b4 anything starts, just quickly take a couple of test shots with and without the bounce etc, see which one is the one u one nd carry on from there.

To use bounce card, omnibounce, or just ceiling bounce is personal preference, the effect is slight different
I using ceiling bounce most of the time, unless the ceiling is too high.

I seldom use fill in flash for outdoor shot, even it is needed, and I use it direct.

Anyway, this is your friend ROM, it is a importance event, please don’t try something that you’re not familiar.

In the main hall, the ceiling is definitely too high for a bounce flash. What ever you try, I think it will still be best if you get a few shots with direct flash for insurance. Unless you are using a digital and can see the results there and then. Actually direct external flash isn't that bad if you take from a distance with a portrait lens ie 80-105mm range without walls behind to catch any shadows. Oh yah and open up the aperture to soften the background.
