About 100 GB of Mp3s, 50GB of photos, and about 850GB of porn. One can never have too much porn.

The majority who replied here owns more than 1TB or whatsoever...I & wife got 2 500GB external, but all my RAW + exported jpegs are taking up not more than 150GB yet...

Would like to ask that is it really the photos that taking up the gianatic spaces you own?

I have 160GB. I found that I have too much space, dunno what to put.

Bcos I dun shoot like machine gun, dun shoot RAW and I delete lousy photos without hesitation and I dun download stuff (only surf webpage, emails and MSN), so end up with lots of disk space. :bsmilie:

LOL guess I got to participate since I got honorable (or dishonorable) mention on this poll. Actually I was referring to # of GB of photos (not including backups) - in my case, getting close to 300GB now.

As I improve, I get a lot more aggressive with pruning the photos I take.

Edit : the reason I answered 2 TB when photos don't take up anywhere close to that is because I have 2 copies of my photos on different external hard disks. And the rest is taken up by OS and apps, and the occasional video.

Btw.... OT abit, anyone has any idea what commonly use 'port' (USB2.0, FireWire... etc) is fastest at transfer ?? I'm more or less stuck with USB2.0..... but heard EtherNet port could also be used to contect my HDD..... is there any true in it ?? :think:

Lots of factor in play here. But all else equal, eSATA will be the fastest. Not because of the raw 3 Gbps speed, but because it doesn't have to go through a bridge. However, if you are using a SATA card that connects through a PCI slot, one of the other options could be faster.

eSATA will be like having a hard disk directly connected to your motherboard. However, not all chipsets, motherboards and OS plays nice with eSATA. eSATA only makes sense if you have a SATA hard disk to begin with.

Between USB and Firewire 400, usually Firewire 400 will be faster even though USB has a theoretical speed advantage. Firewire 800 is fairly rare and expensive.

You can use Ethernet. The more common way would be a network attached storage (NAS). Basically, your hard disk is in an enclosure that is also a file server (NFS, SAMBA, proprietary). Examples are machines running Windows Home Server, Netgear SC101 / SC101T, Linksys NSLU2 (very strange beast) and many others. You can also use iSCSI, which is a SAN protocol, but this is highly unlikely as it is prohibitively expensive and provides feature that no reasonable home user will need.

If you're stuck with USB 2.0, consider getting an external HDD that supports USB 2.0 + eSATA if they don't cost a lot more.
