Hi all!

Nikon newbie here and I recently bought the D90 kit, but am keen to upgrade the lens to the 18-200mm for my travel lens.
How much can i sell the 18-105mm for?

Is the extra tele range of the 18-200mm worth it or should i keep the kit lens and go for the 70-300? Ken Rockwell has a glowing review of the 18-200...

I checked with MS Color and the 18-200 is going for 990...

Thanks! :)

I am also in the same situation - although I will only be getting my D90 today (shiok ar!!!).... I do see some CS-ers selling the D90 kits lens for $350 - hope this helps. I will check the price for a brand new pc later when I head down to buy my camera so post the price.

18-200mm is nice to have but price is a little crazy - for the convenience I guess. Why not you get the 55-200mm to cover off the additional zoom you need, since you are looking at the 18-200mm?

I'm in the same situation too. I think getting a 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 could be a better option. The price for this len is abt $780.

I used 18-200mm lens. It's a very good "Bao Ga Liao"lens, it saves you time for changing lens.:)

Yeah i'm tempted for exactly the same reason..it is more of a bao ga liao lens..useful during travelling...

hmn.... i'm keen in the kit lens.

Go for the 70-300mm and keep your 18-105mm, both VR leh! :)

I would suggest getting the 70-300mm and keep your 18-105mm...good combination. All range covered.:)

Yeah. The 18-105mm VR is rather decent. Get the 70-300mm VR and you have the 27-450mm(equivilent on 35mm) covered:). Furthermore, the 70-300mm VR can be used with FX. So you might only need to sell your D90 and kit next time. It could save you a fair amount of trouble.

Think best you go loan one and try out to see if you like it. There are more to lens than range and price and review. If you cannot get anyone to loan you, try getting one used in the buy and sell section. Buy for one week, then decided for yourself which you prefer, then sell off the one that you don't want.

In this way, you will definately know which one suits your needs.

Cheers

I personally find the 18-200 a good enough lens for my purpose. Ultimately it depends on the user.

You may invest in two lenses with different range, say, 70-300, to add on to your 18-105. But to a casual shooter, I dislike changing my lens, especially outdoor and carrying an extra lens.

There are some 18-200 lens at buy and sell, why not buy there instead of buying new, save the difference to buy a 50mm, which I like very much.

Thank you all for your advice :)

I have decided to save the $$ for a rainy day and keep the 18-105mm lens!
Maybe buy the sb600 and/or the 50mm f1.8..still got money left :)

Thanks once again!

If I started out with a D90 with 18-105, I would definately go with a flash (SB-600) and 50mm f/1.8 next... and if there is more money, to get an ultra wide angle lens. Having focal range is not everything as focal range can be achieved by taking a few steps forward or backwards. Get things which cannot be achieved so easily by walking would be come priority first, i.e. ultrawide angle, flash (though the D90 has a built in flash but it is not powerful enough for many other purposes), and a 50mm f/1.8 which gives you the option of a fast lens for low light photography without flash and better bokeh.

Stay with the 18-105 and get a wide angle + zoom. Coz its really quite a good lens. But if you want to sell it, should be around $300+350 now.
