Just wanna find out how many times u recycle your chemicalcs?

I use mainly TMAX Dev or HC 110. - I dun recycle both

Kodak Rapid Fixer - I usually recycle 3 times.
1st - 2 min
2nd - 3 min
3rd - 4min
All at approx 20 deg celc

I skip the cleaning agent.

Photo-Flo 200 - New to this. So haven't got the chance to experiment

Any ideas? Anybody keen to share?

There is an easy way to check how much time you need to fix your negs: use a piece of UNdeveloped film (that has been exposed), and dip this into the fixer. The fixing time you need is double the time of the period you need to get this piece of film cleared (translucent).....lets say: 2 minutes to get the piece of film cleared, then fixing time is 4 minutes...too long fixing will make your silverlayer come loose from the base.

Good luck!

Thanks hongsien. How abt Photo-flo?

Not sure about Photo-Flo, but I used something similar years ago.....I guess you can recycle it, but all depends on the volume of the solution that contains Photo-Flo. Assuming the concentration of Photo-Flo is the same, a bigger volume can offcourse hold more fixer (taken off from the paper) and can be recycled more......

I use Ilford rapid fixer, recycle once,1st use 6 Minutes,2nd use 13 Minutes,I am using Jobo CPE-2 machine to develope all my film including slide.

hmmm.. with due respect, why do pple want to recycle? I feel that the few cents/dollars you save on chemicals is nothing compared to the time, effort and money u spend taking that picture. I never recycle.... that way, i feel that my work flow and chemistry is never compromised, i can use the same concentration/temp/timing all the time...

my fixer was mixed 3 months ago ... haha ... think 6 washes liao ...

Hmm... why do people refuse to put carpark coupon in a public carpark, when they'd already spend thousands of dollars on the car? :dunno:

Anyway, I'm guilty of recycling my fixer for 2 to 3 times too, usually due to my laziness to mix the fixer up two or three times in one session of film development...

Fixer can be recycled, no problem with that. It won't affect your fixing results, cause the concentration of fixer is usually so much higher to keep the undeveloped silver, it is like an overkill, this is why there is no problem with recycling. Its not about money.....

"Recycling" do reduce waste. And perhaps kinder to the environment.

I didn't want to include the environment cause the silver placed in the solution while recycling or not recycling is still the same, but offcourse the acid use will be reduced........and with the US (and China, India..etc) still refusing to join the Kyoto deal, we must do our best to even reduce more waste......

so Hong Sien, how do you know when to throw? what abt ur developer, stop bath, HCA?

hahaha i remembered! I recycled my toner b4!

Sorry lualua, just read this thread again today......I was only talking about recyclin the fixer which can be done safely, no problems, many people do this in fact. I did hear about recycling FILM developers but I wouldn't recommend as you won't know exactly how much longer you need to extend the developing time (unless you have done this a few times after which you can judge how much longer to develop).

You can however recycle PAPER developer, till the colour changes to yellow. It will turn yellow anyway if stored for too long (oxidation).

I never use stopbath, just a rinse in dihydromono-oxide is enough (this will however shortens life of your fixer).....I am not so worried about prolonging developing by just washing in dihydromono-oxide, as the concentration of developer is sooo low (after washing in dihydromono-oxide) it won't give you any visible effect...

Oooh, and I always recycle dihydomono-oxide

hi there,

Fixer: can be used for 10-15 rolls of black and white film, as long as you use stop bath. This is at 1:5 solution from concentrate.

Some people use two fixer baths: fix for half the time in the old almost exhuausted solution and half the time in a fresh fixer solution. This way you can use the same solution for another 10 rolls of film or 20 sheets of paper.

Stopbath: Kodak indicator stopbath, the smelly one, can be used until it turns purpllish.

Because developers are alkali and most fixers are acidic, you will exhaust your fixer much faster if you do not use stop bath. Stop bath is useful to maintain consistency in your developing routine and cheap so why not use it.

Developer: best to use as one-off solution but some types can be used over and over, just replenish with concentrate. You can't predict the behaviour of developers that have been used multiple times, so how to compensate for developing times? Better to use one off.

Photflo: dip your fingertip into the bottle, rinse that into your last wash in your plastic tank and jiggle film about for 15 seconds, soak for 30 seconds, dump. No need to keep a stock solution just use one off. That kodak bottle will last until you lose interest in doing your own films.

Hypo clear: can use until turn bluish but best to change to fresh solution after about5-8 rolls films or 20 sheets fiber paper. something like that.

And how long can we use dihydromono-oxide?.......

as many times as you pee, smartypants.
