How good is 24-70mm f2.8 lens

The 24-70mm is unbeatable in sharpness, as far as the Nikon lens family is concerned.

Just my 2cents worth, get a 50mm f/1.4G and you are good to go. Just move one step back or forward. It's the same as a 24-70 but with a wider aperture.

Best walkabout lens IMO.

Use the $1800 you saved and go get something else!

Cheers!

Zooming with the feet is possible for outdoor/street/travel photography. If we are talking about indoor photography, for eg shooting an event, it is very difficult. Unless you want majority of the shots to be portraits.

errr... I think the 70-200VR2 and the Nikon Macro lenses are all sharper than the 24-70....

On street or travel also must be careful... back up too much can get run over by a car... or fall down a cliff...

Just my simple 2 cents opinions. If doing event shooting like what we mostly call it, the 24-70 is very versatile. But i am toying to try out the 24-120 f4 to give that extra reach. Couple w a flash the 24-120 should be very much usable as the 24-70. The 24-120 is as sharp as the 24-70 at f4. Of coa ifbyou pixel peep u may say otherwise.
I give give a vote of higher flexibility to 24-120 while maintaining good sharpness over the 24-70.

When you need a sharp 2.8, you need a 2.8.

When you need a 120mm reach, you need a 120mm.

They all have their place.

If you have no need at the moment or near future, then no need.

If you can't see any need at all even for other people, then you are probably too short sighted and limited in experience and creativity.

Happened to me once, though i didnt fall off a cliff but i trip over a stool. During the fall i was like "Must..... Save.... camera.... 1st"

Hehehe here something to make gear boys go sleepiness tonight. According to my crystal ball the next 24-70/2.8 will have a VR in it. The only thing is that darn ball does not give a date....say within the next 1 or 2 years time by then the D800 virus would have reached significant infected numbers.

add another S$500 just for the VR??

24-70, fantastic lens in terms of build quality, sharpness, focussing speed - does not hunt.

only gripe is the weight....almost 1kg if you add on a filter and/or the lens hood.
