How do you play the movies by Nex5?

I remember my office pc Win XP sp2 couldn't play NEX 5 video initially. After I installed VLC, it can play!

Try VLC.

go download those free converters for video file formats, from MTS you can convert into some other formats like avi, wmv etc, file size is smaller and easier to process, quality wise remains good

Download Klite Codec, for simplicity, during installation, select PlayBack, else just install everything.

The mts file is a HDVideo.
W/o converting you can play it on PS3, another Sony product.
My guess is Sony BluRay player should be able to play w/o any fuss.

Else download Super converter to convert the video to mp4 or divx.

Thanks all. I installed VLC and now it can play the video although I think the player is not optimised because the HD image quality is so so only. Also, without anti-shake, the video is a little too jerky so as a tip, I recommend that you ensure to pan more carefully to avoid the jerkiness. :)

try update the WMP to latest (if i remember correctly is 12) and download avchd codec....

How do you do it?
I thought when the update is available, it will automatically be downloaded and installed? :)

I copied the movie files out from my Nex5 SD card into the PC and tried to play them but the mediaplayer feedback no codec. I can understand the avchd files but even Quicktime does not recognise the HD .mov file as well.

In the end, I installed the application from the Sony CD thinking that would work but it seems the software does not allow opening a movie file. Anyone can help on this? I took alot of movies in my recent trip and they are all not playable. I think i have to copy them back into the SD card to play in my camera!

Thanks

QuickTime Player does not naturally support de-coding the MTS. Other universal media players like VLC Player and Mplayer is required for playing the HD footages. Both are freeware. You may try them out. VLC Player is regarded as the first choice by some folks.

Best solution for playing AVCHD footage

Other than VLC you may try Media Player Classic Homecinema which uses DXVA for video decoding if supported.

If anyone is on Windows 7, the built in WMP plays AVCHD files fine right out of the box.

Windows 7 plays AVCHD files natively, without any needed codecs.

If not, install the software provided on the CD, and use either PMB or the AVCHD player to play.

Or use VLC.

Technically, anti-shake in cameras are more like 'anti-vibration'. You can't expect the camera to compensate for shaky camera handling. It's logic: the anti-shake mechanism inside the lens can only move so much.

If you still wanna play on WIndows Media Player, get the K-Lite or similar codecs.

Hey fellas
I just realised that if you installed the PMB program and then connect your NEX5, it automatically detects and downloads the required applications from the internet to play the HD movies and do a few other things. The idiots should have included this software on the CD!

I am not able to install mine properly due to some error. At the end of installation, the system reported it was unable to install the additional program due to error but does not tell what. Based on the troubleshooting guide, i did some steps and renaming of folders and even re-installed a few times but no go. Anyone has this problem? Did you manage to solve it?
With these additional addon apps I am not able to play the HD movies.
Thanks in advance.:)

ps able to do so via VLC but VLC image quality is bad, video jitters somewhat and unstable when you skip.

Time to upgrade your system for HD experience. :bsmilie:
My VLC play smooth on my PC.

My PC uses an ATI onboard graphics chip but I don't think its the computing or GPU power that is lacking. My full HD movies taken from my Pentax DSLR plays perfectly from windows media player. :) Hope Sony can help me resolve the installation problem. Pissed that I cannot use the full features of the app-suite available for the nex5.
