How do one start out as a Videographer?

Hi there, I'm very new in the Videography business. I've done some free videoshoots for people here and there to build up my portfolio.

Would any kind soul care to share about their experience in this business?

I know one way is to list yourself on ads page like Singapore Classified, Singapore Free Classified and wedding websites like Singapore Brides and Wedding Tweets.

Are there other avenues to let other know about your work?

Thanks so much!

You should put your works online as much as possible to catch ppe's attention (but be aware of music license issues). Recommendations will come in gradually. As you need more projs to shoot to put more good videos online, its a closed cycle. You got to start somewhere. Just start with watever you have and be patient. Depending on your quality or works and service attitude, it can take 2-4 yrs to reach decent prices that you think is worth your while.

Welcome to the video community! All the best!

Marketing is much more important than many realise in this business.

It is not always the most talented who gets the job but the one who can market him/herself better.

So be prepared to spend a lot of time marketing yourself.

True. When u say marketing, are u referrring to taking up ads space in Bridal Magazines, websites or google etc?

Do whatever it takes to promote yourself sufficiently.

I was in corporate video, so not in a good position to advise you on wedding biz. But I believe you can pretty much follow the wedding photographers strategies in this forum.

Reputation is also very important in this industry. Being late, not putting up a nice smile, minor mistakes can all cost you the job and future referrals.

If you are brilliant enough, can consider doing a viral video to market yourself?

I also suggest that you hook up with bridal studios, wedding car rentals, restaurants, hotels, and photographers. Building up a network will result in very valuable cross referrals. Sometimes, a photographer will recommend me for some video job and I will do so vice-versa.

You may want to consider the market segment that you want to serve. Do you want to earn a high income by serving the mass market with e.g. $700-$1000 full-day packages that you can push out within a couple of days? Or do you want to produce the best artwork that takes weeks to edit? The latter route will give you very low income for quite a long while until you can command a price that pays for the weeks of editing.

Marketing is truly important. It is a double edge sword too. If done correctly and your works are good compared to competition, you'll be highly sought after in a very short time. But if your works or service is below market std, the whole world will get to know it really fast when you have good marketing! Haha.....

To get business, me and my group join those wedding event at singapore expo, book a booth or table, with samples of my work to show for the potential client. if 1 person only very very expensive to start marketing yourself, should get to know other in this line. anyway im in the malay market only.

btw, more often than not, video production isnt a 1 person job, but a whole production team.

the worst thing u wanna be is in a team that is ineffective.
