used it b4. for versatility, it's great.

but the AF is rather slow. u might want to look for the AFS 200-400/f4 too? or else, the 300 + TC might be a good alternative.

I like the 80mm, still shootable...if object is nearby..:D

by the way, if you got big budget, should consider the AFS 300 F4 + Nikon TC1.7

this is a good setup. gives good reach and good quality with handholdability and portability. Even better results with tripod. But no VR. Probably the best light-weight compromise.

I see the AF-S 70-300mm VRII as the AF-D 80-400mm VR's sucessor.

The nikon AFD 80-400mm 4.5-5.6 VR seems to me like a mirror of Canon's EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM ( although most of nikon fans would be hopping for an AFS version instead ), both of which are more expensive than Nikon and Canon's own offerings of 70-300mm zooms which occupy a seperate niche.

If any successor, it better be an AFS ;(

Ha ha...thks...maybe getting this Sat....BBB...:bsmilie: But very ex leh...and it's a 5 yrs old lens scare got new model...

Your shots are fantastic.

Just curious, If you have the choice, which are the following combination you will choose:

AFS 300F4 + Nikon TC1.7II
AFS 200F2.8+Nikon TC1.7II
Which combination offer the best IQ.Thanks

Thank you. I prefer to shoot birds so i need longer range, so i will pick AFS 300F4 + Nikon TC1.7II. But there will be definitely a drop in the IQ. If you can. Take the AFS 300F2.8 VR + Nikon TC1.7II .

It should be the successor of AF 70-300mm ED lens... not the AF-D 80-400mm VR.

Any regrets after u get this lens??:D

I think the lens is still too short for me... I need at least a 500mm cos i shoot birds... Depends on what you shooting..... Apart from slow af... i think it is still a good lens.

Nice lens to have for bright day light! other than that ... sigh...

Very slow AF

It is a great lens. except AF but with D200 and body not too bad. I shot this with D70 and 80-400mm. depends how you use the lens, however i switch to 70-200 with 2x tc, as I spend most time at home shooting my kids.

Forget about 50-500 bigma unless using tripod. Almost wanted to buy that but end up getting Nikon 80-400 + 2TC. Never regret since. AF wise is a setback, especially u wanna focus fast.
