How close can i shoot without macro lenses ?

The biggest aperture lens i saw was the EF 50mm f1.0L... so big!

Just curious, if I choose to use the macro tube, will there be a drop in picture quality since the tube increases the distance of the len to the film/CCD sensor?

Extension tubes may lead to light falloff, but otherwise affects image quality to a lesser degree than closeup lenses.
