hi there..

i'll be going to HK for a short holiday next wk.. juz wondering whether the prices of speedlights and lens in HK is worth getting it over there?

I heard that it is cheaper, though warranty is local.

How true is that? pls advise.

Thanks.

I don't know about other brands. I believe Nikon's speedlights and lenses are international warrantied.

I also heard that lenses are cheaper there too....hmm....I found out that some of the shops in Singapore like AP got their lenses from Hong Kong too so I believe it should be slightly cheaper there.I guess it's better to do your homework first by checking out the price difference before buying... good luck....

Eik... u refering to Speedlight or Speedlite?... hahaha... :bsmilie:

I think you guys better thinks twic of getting those equipment from Hk cos over there of spending is very expensive even you are going for eating.
And also the currency is about singpore S$1 to Hk$4.75, cos I've just visited HK and china ShenZhen with my family members during the 3rd day of chinese new year.

I've even bought a pair of niki shoe for my wife for about HK$100 per pair

i think camera stuff are cheaper in HK. my friend bought her digital cam in HK and it is about S$100 cheaper than in SG. But buying photography stuff in HK is also a bit more tricky than in SG. there is this thing called shuifo, meaning these are smuggled into the territory without going through the customs. visit some HK photography forums, remember they have some discussions there.

Eating-wise depends on where you go. There is a whole range of restaurants in HK, the prices in the normal ones are about the same as crystal jade in sg.

but transport is expensive. a short distance from MK to Central will cost you about S$3.00 by MTR.

some are cheaper, some more expensive. would be good to know the singapore prices before u go over.

there're cheap transport too.... trams from Causeway Bay to Central via tram is HKD2(?) and the Star Ferry is only HKD1.70 for magnificent view of the Hong Kong skyline.

thanks.

actually, i am looking at getting a SB-800 and a tamron 90mm sp f2.8 over @ HK.

anyone have personal experience shopping for cam-related stuff while in HK?
pls share.

thanks.

Agree with Mpenza, I go to HK a few time this month for work and i did some survey on the Canon equipment, the price are not much diff. Sometime if you are really unlucky and the new purchased equipment just spoilt after you went back to SG, the warranty is a big issue.

prices are generally cheaper in hk than in singapore for lens and cameras (canon and nikon). firstly they have a bigger target audience than in singapore hence a different pricing policy. secondly they have no gst. in general the marginal savings is higher for the higher range lens i.e. more expensive.

like in singapore, there are reputable shops and the not-so-reputable shops in hk. the trouble is finding the right ones!

1. try to avoid shops in nathan road area. they are well known for targeting the tourist crowd and have a reputation for fleecing customers. also stay away from shops that sell cameras as well as other non-camera/photography stuff.

2. in my opinion, there are some reputable dealers located along stanley street in central near lan kwai fong.

3. look out for re-furbished goods sold as new. and always ask what you are getting. do not assume! sometimes they charge you for accessories that are supposed to be free like lens cap etc.

4. sometimes the goods are sealed in the box so make sure you check the contents and it's what you are buying.

5. go to an authorised shop if you can. always check and read the warranty card. it will be stated on the card if it covers internationally. canon singapore will require a receipt as proof of purchase as well as the international warranty card. you may want to re-confirm this with canon singapore (tel 6799 8888 - ask for service center else you will be transferred around)

6. do your homework - list down the items you are interested in and do a research on the prices in singapore. this way you will have a basis of comparison. having said that, check the prices with a couple of stores in hk before committing to one.

7. langauge - it helps if you speak cantonese. if you can't, bring along a friend who can. hong kongers are not too friendly if they perceive you to be a tourist asking many questions without buying anything. the camera shops are like a mad house and they don't have the luxury of time to entertain you. so don't go during rush hours if you want an attentive sales person.

help this helps your hk shopping experience...

you shld count yourself lucky, its was SGD1 : HKD4.5 couple of months ago.

To sensx: SB800 and tamron90 is relatively cheaper(~10%) even if you go to the reputable big camera shop ie. Wing Shing
from wat i know, the flash will hav intl warranty, Tamron gears only hav local warranty(not 100% sure cos i buy grey stuffs mostly to get bigger savings)

happy shopping

thanks ppl for all your replies..

will look out for bargains while over there.

i understand that AP retails the sb800 @ ~$620.. tamron90 pricing, anyone can assist??

what should i look out for in testing the flash? other than physical, functional checks and warranty checks on serial nos... any other helpful hints not to be cheated?

for your reference...
both items are roughly abt $560 in HK...
if you get grey.. its even cheaper

chk the items professionally, otherwise you are bound to get some bad attitude from them.
or if possible go during off peak hrs

MScolor quoted $590 for a Tamron 90mm f2.8 Di Macro today.

AP quoted me S$550 for tamron 90mm f2.8 Di Macro today

Just come back from HK last week, Bought SB800 at WingSheng in Mongkok @ HKD2480, by credit card.

The warranty card shows " Nikon Worldwide Service Warranty", no sure is it recognized by Nikon Singapore though.

remember to exchange money in Singapore bf going, S$ rate in mongkok is horrible, about HKD4.05 to 1$ Sing, while I got HKD4.785 here.
