its ok to be shareholders, u get your dividends for sure. I hope the government see the bigger picture that privatizing public transport operator doesn't means solely caring about the bottomline only. From this episode, can see that it is still a national issue.

I think smrt needs to hire a fengshui master for its HQ at city hall. Look like change CEO also no use.

It's easier said then done.....I recently be my own boss and have the first hand on how hard to keep the company profitable in inflated economy like this, with the rocketed infra cost (rent, transport, licenses etc), the recent FT curb does not help in our bottom line, there are only limited local candidates available, those good one all wanted to be white colar or managers in MNC, so what we are left with are those using us as steping stone, the commitment level and skill sets are no where near our requirement but we have to make do or we have to close shop. Given a choice, I will take FT anytime even with same pay rate. As an employer, it's inevetable for us to look at every aspect to save and wages being one of the biggest component are more apparent. We have to look at SMRT as a for profit organisation before we jump into conclution. These workers are hired under cotract, since they have accepted the offer, they should honoured and complete whatever terms that they sign on for, holding their employer at ranson by refusing to work is already breaching the contract in any professional, they will be sued I am sure. If not happy, don't take up the offer and I am sure they are many more people interested, it's willing buyer willing seller market, no one pointing a gun at them in the first place.

Need to install a sedan chair at HQ entrance to ensure continuity of success and prosperity:

You got to be a maroon to even think they want to riot. Ho ho ho

Maroon? LOL. Nah. I'm beige. :bsmilie:

You don't know labour disputes can turn into riots? Of course, one would say I am overstating the chances. However, most of the time when situations is under control, we would call that paranoia. When the rare time things happens, who shall be responsible? If you are so clever, I'm sure you can figure out yourself.

BTW, I am guessing you wanted to insult me, which remains just a guess until you are educated enough to spell it correctly. :bsmilie:

Maroon is a color Mr speak-good-english. It is an adjective, not a noun. Did you mean moron by any chance?

Yours sincerely, grammar Nazis.

Don't bother, I was having a splendid time laughing. I'm no user of queen's English, but I do know maroon is a colour and it is hardly a typo. It is especially sad that out of the whole sentence, the word that is supposed to insult me and stir me up actually tickled me into laughing. :bsmilie:

I'm reading your nick as

"SP Go JC"

Whatever that means

Unfortunately, I could not find a work place or a country without some form of "discrimination" - is just a matter of degree. Could you?

It is discrimination. It's discrimination they're willing to put up with (for now).

Quite agree ... therefore assuming that the PRC indeed has lower compensation ... SMRT should replace all the higher paid Malaysian workers with the more lower paid PRC workers ... so that then the terms would be the same or fair right? .... or it is also possible ask the Malaysian workers to do take up what is left out by the PRC workers or the earlier action will be taken yes? kekeke ... I think a lot of local workers have experienced similar unspoken pressure for a long tme... the difference is that locals are not "conditioned" to go on strike or protest ... so why can't SMRT use similar approaches? :)

If the transport companies raise the starting pay to $2.5-3k on a 5 day work week, will there be enough locals who will take up the job? While I understand the need to reduce operating costs and return value to shareholders. Are the public transport companies in such bad finances that they cannot afford to pay locals to do the job? Even if they have to replace 200 foreign drivers (6 day week) with 250 locals (5 day week), they are likely to pay $4-5 million more in wages per year. If you take away the need to provide accommodations and other costs incurred that comes with hiring foreigners, maybe less. IIRC the 2 transport companies' combine profit for each of the past few years has been more $100 million, closer to $200 mil. By reporting 5-10% lesser profit to raise local employment rate seems like a better solution than to continue to suppress wages and maximize shareholders value at the expense of Singaporean.

While the issue raised by the PRC drivers circle around unfair rewards and standards, there is a bigger issue circling many companies. These companies keep suppressing wages, making jobs unattractive to locals, while continuing to report huge profits to shareholders. IMHO, companies providing public services should seriously look into adjusting from a maximizing profit to a sustainable profit model. Else there will be factions of unhappy foreigners and plenty more emotionless locals.
