hmmm, actually the body and lens is ok one.... u think of it this way, if u are really into it, into making this a serious photography, u can get a good setup with an entry level DSLR plus its kit lens for maybe about 1.5K? save a bit here and there can get one right?

but then again, 1.5K isnt that small of a sum also. but it does boils down to whether is the buy worthwhile for you or not. if its not worthwhile, even spending 400 on a camera seems too expensive.

Welcome to CS.

Just start within yr budget. Use yr P&S to learn the basic like composition. In later stage when you feel you want to get more serious in photography, then you can consider DSLR. You mention taking close-up subject. well, I know of someone here using a P&S to shoot excellent Macros that even DSLR cannot beat. I think Tchuanye (Bro, sorry for using you as example) is using Canon A610 + some accessories and his macro photos are stunning. Visit the Macro section and find out.

My point here is that you dont have to own a DSLR to shoot beautiful photos. Skill is more important.

haha okay, i was wrong. but how many of us here are contended with 1 body and 1 lens?

sorry but i do know someone from here that uses a d2x with its kit lens. and i asked why? he said it still produces stunning images. it's a case of my panasonic lumix dmc-f1 against his d2x, and at the end of the day, it's the images that we took that matter. does the kit lens matter? i'd say it's a no =).

and i agree with uncle deswitch here, i've been using my pns for outings with groups of like 10-20+ photographers using sophisticated equipments but we're all here for the passion of photography. sometimes we just needa learn the basic before we actually plunge ourselves into the world of dslr which might end up causing a huge amount of money.

i agree totally about the picture matter most. if u read my previous post b4, i have said that too. other threads though...

DSLR would be for someone interested in seriously going deeply into photography. as u said be, the flexiblity of interchanging lens is the big plus of DSLR. its definately a exp hobby. to go for a higher body would mean u can afford it and u can fully utiliize the upgrade. if u dont have wat it takes, give u a 1DMKII u or a D2Xs also cannot take that good a pics my gf whom uses a coolpix 775 which is i think quite old and have a long shutter lag, can take great pics too!

to be content with kit lens depends on wat u want to shoot. if u are for general shooting and also general landscape, i think kit lens like the 18-70mm is good enuff. macro and events or sports or bird shooting i would say are more specialised area. definately u need lens designed to shoot those stuff. then no choice, u got to BBB.

then again, u can BBB sensibly. me and my fren dont jump at every lens we see.. we think, we budget and we deliberate over them b4 buying. simply becos we cant really afford to BBB, being students.

DSLR is a major step into photography i would say. I myself thought long b4 taking the plunge and buy my first body and kit. been shoot on the kit for long, as it is sharp and good. its a hobby that i found interest liking, hence decided to pursue it for long.

finally, as i say lah, i think most of us wish for a higher cam body. if can afford, go for it, if cannot, jus get wat u can afford and shoot to get the skill!

newer models will come and go with time, but skills picked up will never go away!

Dslr give your more control over your camera and gives your the creativity and imagination of how you want your shot to be like. it's the flexibility of changing the lenses and getting quality outta the lens you own.

sometimes i just shoot with my pns and get very frustrated with the fact that it has its limitation. photography is about being there at the right place at the right time somehow. sometimes if my pns can't perform at that crucial moment, i'll just curse and swear! :bsmilie:

but handling some dslrs now and then, it really gives me a wider range of control and technically handling. not to mention the uses of different lenses, my pns zoom has its limit but theres this chance where i might get a tele lens for some event shooting. that might be an adventage to owning a dslr system.

Hm so the only differences between a DSLR and a compact digicam would be that it sounds more pro, looks more pro, more expensive, more things to take care of and has more versatility? Oh...that sounds like alot of work!

u get more versatility with using DSLRs. but still, it really depends what u want to shoot. the quality of photos between compacts and DSLRs is quite a significant difference. the list can go on for the differences.
u won't want to look pro and sound pro and get bashed for taking lousy pics with such a good cam.. kekeke.

if u r not sure if this interest will stay with u, its best not to get a camera too exp, but at the same time, lets u play around with settings. diff between DSLR and digicam is a lot, its not really just the outside. its something like difference between a 500k P**che sports car and a 50k car, really cant compare in terms of performance. and of cos, the 500k one eats more fuel, so same thing here, "maintaining" DSLR is also more expensive.

Impaction, to improve artistically, first thing you need is INSPIRATION. Feel it with your heart as well. Good shots need not be 'beautiful'. Sometimes can be creepy themed or a photo that evokes a 'dark' emotion.

Yup, you'll need to pick up some basic composition techniques. Eg thirds rule, etc. These can be picked up from basic photography books or by simply asking around.

A better camera gives you technically better photos. Greater control of settings and a wider range of settings avalaible. Also better quality of photos. But it doesn't give you artistically better photos.

i think the price also need about 500 to 600? its steep for me lah. cos i no money liao. haa haa. spent 2K on my DSLR setup.

but i was surprise how much i bought with jus 2K. of cos it takes time to slowly look for good deals around

there is also a pricelist for nikon found in the nikon thread. but all are jus for referencing.

i buy my gear 2nd hand here in BnS. I feel its safe to buy and also much cheaper. but of cos, u might have to wait and see for a longer time to get good deal. but i feel its part of the fun!

aside from that, once u get ur cam, which every it is, jus go out and shoot lor!

personally, compact cam would serve 1 purpose for me, for me to go to occasions where bring a DSLR is bulky. else DSLR for me all the way. Spent so much on it, should bring it out ma right?

i also want. its slim lah and also i think the quality is great too. but for me, no money to get compact now....

jus use my gf's one lor. still usable and can take good photos too
