High ISO Noise: Questions & Observations

Some people like noise , some don't. What so hard to understand about this.Photography to me is taking photos. Nothing less , nothing more. What i take , how i take, is for my own personal consumption.

To me a camera with decent iso performance is a900 , its just one of the specs that i look at. It's not the most important, i'm more interested in resolving power and resolution.

hi

i visited davidsolomons flickr, yes it is really good...

i guess he must have spend alot of time on streets... patiently waiting .. searching...

tks for sharing...

you can search for david solomons on youtube, there's a video showing him shooting.

very calm, very measured. :thumbsup::thumbsup:

i guess u r using a full frame loh..

my 550d iso 1600 pic can only barely make it, and i am taking about 600 to 800 pixels on the long side..

and when i do PP, the noise will be magnified when i raise contrast etc...

i cannot use flash , bcos i take street photos , so i don't want to use flash on strangers....

:)

If you are going to PP your image, make sure you don't do steps that magnified the noise... it is not easy to do, but you can do it if you know your photoshop well enough.

Most of the time, wrong handling in shooting and PP results in unusable images due to noise.

By knowing your camera limitation and shoot around it will help.

Hart

It is not hard to understand if people like noise or not... as you say, "Photography is about taking photos, nothing less and nothing more" if that's what you are doing, I am puzzled that you are complaining about the tool (camera gear) in the first place?

If photography is about taking photos, I don't think it matters what you use and how you use it...

Hart

If you have read the thread more carefully, we have been saying this since the beginning.

Ya, sometimes, the spec of the new system seems quite impressive. With all the i5, i7 and new AMD system out there, it makes my 4/5 years old PC looks like an ancient system. But it works, and I even use it to PP my A900 photos.

I used to be crazy with gears (checkout my gear profile, you would get an idea of crazy I was), now no.

so far i have been doing bnw, and when i enhance the contrast using level and curves on the whole pic or part of the pic, the noise get enhance... sometimes i leave it as it is, as i think someimtes i like the noise... but on some instances i am just forced to reduce the contrast...

do u mind telling me what could i do to improve?

as for wrong handling, i am not sure. what do u mind by that? u r the 2nd one after nightmare who mentioned it, so both of u must have seen a lof of that...

care to advise?

i usually compensate by -1ev or even -2 when i shoot using my 500d with 18-55 kit lens after dark... partly to enable me to shoot at higher shutter speed and partly to recreate the low light scene.. using 0 on my 500d at night using evaluative metering always over expose... actually i know i should ETTR.. but using a kit lens i got no choice la... wait till i get a f/2.8 then i can do ETTR... but then i am happy with what i get even with -2 on the kits lens...

actually when i check on the pic i took... i did spot one user mistake... i took them at 18mm with f/5.6 ... it would be better if i use f/3.5 , the largest available...

a850 is rumoured to be using the same sensor as a900... i saw a site that measure the pic produced by the 2, and they said the 2 cam are very close...

a850 is abt 2600 sgd ... so much cheaper than other FF... and most imp it is lighter .. haha

:)

It is using the same sensor , but the a900 has a better viewfinder and faster fps.

It is sad that you are no longer crazy with gears. I believe you lost your passion? Gears are the most important thing here.

No, photography is not about gear. You still don't get it.

Thats interesting , i think you're the first person i've heard that says that. Gear is indeed very important , otherwise i would be satisfied with just framing with my fingers and saying that s a nice shot. I think you have to reconsider your position, can you function without gear? If you know how to use your gear properly , it can only aid in capturing better pictures.

A point & shoot in the hands of Ansel Adams will easily outdo a wannabe carrying the latest and most expensive equipment.

I think you haven't hear enough. Photography is not about gears. There are many out there who uses lomo, pinholes, cheap pns andcamera phones. Trust me there are many out there with works that beat anyone who own the 'best' gears.

I shoot manual mode only and rely on AF to lock in focus.

So I will just shoot what I want to appear... I don't let my camera do the metering as the camera don't see what I see.

Most people are rushing to get many shots, what I do mostly is look around until I see the image in my mind before I lift my camera to get a shot. Then I will take another 10 shots of the same thing with slight variation to the way I want it and most of the time, the first or second shot is good enough but the rest is just in case.

I never seems to have problem with noise issue unless of course, I make a mistake myself...

Hart

The point is if he has expensive and latest equipment , he can do even better.
And iphone photography ?? c'mon , those look horrible. To me quality trumps composition , i know most ppl don't agree but thats how i define good pictures. It's a mixture of quality and composition.

If I am the 1st person who said to you, then you been associating yourself with gear collectors, not photographers.

Yes yes... that is exactly what a lot of people started with..... in terms of photography...

Newbie lush about gear that they can't afford or don't have yet and will obsessed with gear...

I think many of people here come from that stage and move on and focus on photography...

Unfortunately, it seems that you are still at that stage... there is nothing wrong with it... Also it seems that you take advise into negative feedback and if the cup is so full, what else is there to fill?

If you are not even at peace with your gear (since you are still complaining abt it)... I can hardly understand that you are enjoying the activity that is taking picture...

No doubt, when you buy a piece of gear, wow, what a best feeling... but somehow, as soon as you take a few pictures with it, you don't get what you want... best thing to do is to blame your gear... aren't human are great in pretending they are great?

wake up and look around... the center of the universe is not on the square meter that you are stepping right now.

Some photographers think that they are the best by owning the best gear and have the "I am THE photographer" mentality... unfortunately, unless they are amazingly talented and have produced the work that no one else can produce.... I am not sure how he is going to even survive... let alone enjoying photography...

Enough rant from me....

Wow...I foresee that the financially fortunate youths of today will easily surpass the photography greats then.
