before I buy my first camera, would like to hear from you guys....

I'm just wondering if the following are reasonable:

D90 body only + tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens = $2000

i intend to use D90 to learn photography. Is this the right way or should i stick with the Nikon kit lens instead?

seems like people around me are criticizing me in getting a nikon when they told me i can achieve the same results by recommending:

500D + 18-55IS + 55-250IS (Dual Kit lens) = $1690

or

500D + tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens = $1700

or

500D + 18-55IS(Kit lens) = S$1,260.00

Hum.. I am not expert but I am almost in the same position with you. But I guess, based on the report that I read from internet, D5000 or D90 pictures result suit my taste better.

Have you searched about their photo samples?

Thanks guys for the advice.

Actually I was also thinking of buying my DSLR in comex show. Then I saw some ads by Audio House that they selling cheaper than comex. Not sure if the freebies are the same or not so still considering whether to buy at comex.

My budget including accessories is about $1.5k, so hoping can get something good enough with that amount. I am planning to buy body + kit since I have not much experience in lens yet and maybe a dry cabinet (dun wanna spoil my 1st DSLR!). Those kits that I see coming with the lens are 18-105mm. Is that good enough to take baby photos when the baby like to move?

I had my first DSLR a couple of months ago, also bought it to take photos of my baby. I went for the kit lens 18-55 and realise within my first trip out to the zoo that it was not enough, then had it changed for the 18-105 mm. you need at least this zoom to shoot when you are on a field trip. instances when you want to take a photo on the other side of the fence or or during water play at one of those fountains in shopping mall when you need to shoot from a distance to keep your camera dry.

Thanks a lot guys.

Due to budget constraints and my wife's complains :(, I decided to go for an older DSLR (either D80 or D40) since they are about the same but price different. After reading some forums about Nikon cameras and that I am going to focus on my kid's childhood photos, a D80 or D40 would be sufficent enough for me(skills matter most rather than the type of camera!). Hopefully can get some good deals during comex or from the recommended stores. :)

You can consider a Pentax K20D, an advanced amateur (if the term even makes a point?). Its only around $900 new.

1. On-Body SR (SR =shake reduction)
2. Good color and contrast
3. Affordable prices on bodies and lenses
4. Very good lenses at low prices
5. Solid build

Would advise you to ignore the advice of those friends then.

The bundled Nikon kit lens is very decent as for beginners. Nice range with VR. Consider using it for the time being and expanding when you know what you want later on.

Why would your friends criticize you? are they all canon users?
d90 + tamron 1750 is a good combo.
in fact so is canon 500D + tamron 1750 combo.

i see from the prices you list out, that the canon combo is 300 cheaper.
it's totally up to you.

Like many have suggested, go to the shop to hold each in your hand and play with it and decide from there. It helps.

You need to mention the area of photography you are interested to learn before others can advise u mah..

Later people advise you tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 but u like to shoot macro, then ..?
