Hi all, I need some advice on which camera i should get! I am currently looking at Olympus E-PL6, Lumix GF6. which is better, or any other models to recommend?

M budget is around $500-$1k, and I want a camera that can take sharp, clear, and vibrant photos! Image quality to be close to DSLR quality. I will be traveling to Nepal, and the temp will be sub-zero degs. I hope the camera is able to work in such conditions? I am also looking forward to taking starlight photos, any advice on which camera is better?

I will be climbing a mountain, so i will be shooting mostly from auto mode. Which cameras are more user-friendly, and easier to use?

Any advice would be good! Thanks guys!

Not sure if you've seen this: http://craigmod.com/journal/gf1-fieldtest/
It was the review that made me (and I'm sure a lot of others) pay attention to m43.

Just to say that you'll be fine with anything within your budget if even the GF1 was good enough for nepal then

Get a OMD EM5. For your budget.

I'll be leaving for Nepal in 20 days time; 14 day trek; Annapurna.

Just to share a bit :)

Local training we had a 2 days trek. Walk from Dover to Bukit Timah ending at Macritchie; aka around 10 hrs per day. Finale we swam across the reservoir at its narrowest point. All gear and bags submerged in water haha.

I was undecided to bring my MFT gear (was planning EP5 + 12-35, 9-18 ) or a very high end compact beforehand but I brought my compact finally and I was thankful.

U know the standard qns like IQ , wanna bring my best guns for the trip etc, I was also bothered by it.

Final decision is now a high end compact. (From the RX100II , X20, DLux6 category).

Don't forget u will be lugging along a backpack n stuff at the same time and walking a few hours at a stretch. Most likely a walking stick in one hand too.

Was at my fav shop 2 weeks ago, bro leaving for Nepal too , undecided to bring a FF setup or compact. I chio him to bring his FF setup for a walk. Compact in the end where he bought one straightaway 2 days before his trip.

If u r sticking to MFT which is still obviously a great choice , skip the Pana sensors if u plan to do long exposures.

For your budget ; getting a EM5 is pushing it already, the EPL5 or EPL6 will suit your needs more. Excellent OOC JPEG, easy handling , lightweight and sensor quality same as EM5, can't ask for more.

And lastly, I had almost forgot this piece of wisdom when deciding my gear to bring.
Taking great sharp, vibrant and clear photos really depends on the person behind the camera.

If its going to be rough....get a second hand EM5 with the kit. Ideally you shd hv the 12-35 but that would put you beyond budget by another 1.2 k.

long exposure and cold weather will eat up batt life quicker than our tropical temp and single shots... so ensure u have back up batteries. wireless type remote shutter release will come in handy when it is really cold and u can release shutter from comfort of your cabin/room/tent... etc

For me, it would definitely be the RX100 if I'm trekking. DSLR quality that I can put in the pocket. It also works very nicely with landscapes in low light. It also charges via USB so even your iPhone charger or a battery pack will work.

out of fun, we pulled out the Canon G15, RX100, RX100ii , X20, X100s and DLux 6 & we all tested them all together. All i can say is each compact has its strengths and weaknesses :) And ergonomics, software, usability ranks very importantly even though sensor size is generally where a lot of hype is bandied around nowadays. Look at e whole package.

I've not tested the RX100 against other cameras together, but I have been using it since end-2012 and I'm still amazed at what can be produced after hundreds or thousands of shots. When I am on holiday, I've stopped bringing any other cameras along even though I have the OMD & NEX-6 and some wonderful lenses. It's not perfect by a long shot but I don't feel I've left much behind.

Don't worry la, the RX is a superb camera :) what I really love abt it is the low light / high ISO performance.

To the TS. If you are going to travel to more inhospitable places and outdoors etc. the recommendation should be EM5/EM1/GH3 as those 3 are all weather sealed. This very important point wasn't mentioned by the other posters.

Of the3, you can find great prices for EM5 @ bns.
For lenses you will need a weather sealed lens and the most cost effective whether sealed lens is the 12-50 m zuiko that is the kit lens. With 5axis iS you can even shoot in lower light. That's my suggestion based on budget constraint as well as environment you will be in.

Well if you looking for em-5 brand new, go to harvey Norman expo sale this weekend. Body plus kit lens $1339.

Woww hello fellow trekker :)

thanks for all the advice! Hmm, so it seems an high end compact is good. From all yall's recommendations it seems RX100II is good? The reviews and photos look good. But its abit pricey? S$999?

If we are looking at compact cameras, will Powershot P330 be okay? If im getting compact camera, perhaps my budget is less than $500? Does it work this way? haha.

Yea I agree! Good photos depends more on the person, less on the equipment! But.... Im noob lol.
Anw, I went to Sim lim, and there was this shop that showed me GF3 and EPL3. The photos on GF3 really looks sub-quality, I'm wondering if there was anything done on the camera?! The guy was trying to force us into buying EPL3, and the whole incident turned quit nasty after that. =/ But I was wondering if the image quality i saw on the GF3 was a true representation of the GF series?

May I know where's your fav shop? Hahaha walao sim lim is super scary, never going back again.

Good shops selling m4/3 IMO :
SLRR
MS Color
Tk foto
Cathay
John 3:16
There may be others that I don't frequent. Doesn't mean they are no good. :)

But Sim lim is really not a place to go if you're not an expert. I only go there for pc components after I've done research. Btw I used to own the gf3. Same sensor as the one in epl3. Just that image processors differ. Not sure what you saw but I would guess that shots on both would be similar.

hey haha.

I don't go to Sim Lim; I don't have enough guts to play the game there :) The shop u patronized prob wanted to clear old stocks.
Can't comment much on the GF3, but it was a camera i bought and sold within a few weeks, i prob didn't know how to maximise its abilities.

U should factor in e price of an extra batt.

I remember u said u most prob will be shooting AUTO, so i gonna go along these lines n assume u prefer great OOC JPEGs. I won't be discussing the models with interchangeable lenses. That direction EPL5/6, EP5, EM5, GX7 will be more than sufficient to fit your needs.

while choosing the 'best' compact FOR ME (in case pple get agitated haha, Disclaimer: pple have diff needs hence diff tastes k so these pertain to me. I tried almost all the high end compacts w/zoom (TRY meaning use for at least 2 weeks). my verdict is:

x20 : Best handling/ergonomics, OVF info overlay is unique to them and superb. Letdowns are not as fast AF and tends to hunt around in low light. I paid around $700. Not really good with long exposures.

RX100M2 : Largest sensor in compact (Other than RX1) , excellent low light/high ISO performance. a bit too small for me.
Couldn't tahan that u can't use the lens ring as zoom effectively. Complicated menu; my friend and me agreed this is the only model we can 'get lost' in. Telephoto end its f4.9, slower than x20 and DLux6. Good long exposures.
Get ready to skip e EVF if u r going for this as its around $600 alone. I paid around $850. A camera w/great IQ but handling abit sad.

DLux6: My final choice. Pple are debating about this (against LX7) but my 2 cents is this is the camera u gotta shoot JPEG in, not RAW. Buying this to shoot RAW will be silly as RAW output is same as LX7.
Leica's menu, handling and tweaked OOC Jpeg colors are superb. I got an Panasonic EVF for $200. Paid $750 for it.
Best lens/glass out of all the choices.
This is what i'm bringing to Nepal if not my EP5+12-35.

Nikon V and J series + Canon M: never in my consideration at all. Heard the G15 also good, but i never tried it.

final advice is: bro, if u ain't sure what u wan, PM me, i intro u to a shop. Drop my name there n state your needs. They will let u try n feel the cameras until happy then buy. Don't wana buy just say thank u and go off.

or simply : answering your original question on which m4/3 to choose:

EM5+12-50/3.5-6.3 following most recommendations here :) Getting a 2nd hand one from BnS shouldn't go beyond your budget. If u r willing to spend a bit more, get the 12-35/2.8 for lens instead.

Sim Lim is ok if you know the right shops to go.
There's SLR Revolution and Orient Photo, both are ok. The rest are mostly butcher shops especially 1st level (perhaps except Alan Photo?)

Anyways, there's a few other outside of funan (there are a couple bad ones too) which are good as well, Holland V Parisilk, MS Color in AMK central.

It does helps to use ClubSNap for such info, when I first started digital camera was chopped at Lucky Plaza (right, of all places), I guess we all start somewhere dun we? :)

Woah, hahaha this is helpful! I was at a loss at which place to get the cam from, since i only know sim lim! Thanks!

Eh, from what the person showed me, he took a few photos of his shop with GF3 and EPL3, the photos from GF3 were dull while EPL3's were very vibrant. Totally not what i'd expect from a GF3, and miles away from the review of GF1 that kandinsky posted earlier.

Well like I said, i used to own a GF3 and the pictures can be tweaked to be very vibrant! Also, if you shoot raw, you can post process however you like. The GF3 was quite good actually.

here's a couple of GF3 shots.. Nothing great compositionally, but just to show the colour.. lightly PP in LR

Agree with Agrivar..
GF3 definitely can produce images which are very vibrant..

Sales tactics by the sales personnel..
Olympus jpeg engine is known for punchy colors.. But Panasonic can also do that.. Just need to tweak the settings slightly and you can get something close to Olympus colors..
