Help on buying diamond ring....

Spend so much for a stone, why not buy a camera for her
i can bet many of the guys here spend more on their camera equipment than a stone

My engagement ring is from Blue Nile. No need for Tiffany & Co. The equivalent of my diamond probably costs 4 times as much there. HAHA.
Its been 6 months since I've been wearing it but can I say that I still get other MEN stopping that few seconds to stare and admire at my ring when I go for salsa lessons? Lol!! That never fails to lighten up my day. Fine I know that sounds shallow but ladies do...
TS, its true that cut is most important, hence my fiance chose AGS-ideal for me. Colour H (coz side diamonds are H as well so they might look yellow if fiance chose a better colour) but coz of the cut, it sparkles like mad. Lol. Clarity is VS2, not as good as VVSs of coz but really not visible to the naked eye. Carat is 0.5. Not too big coz this has already scratched so many things incl my fren's hand when she walked beside me!! Hahaha.

True, I'm much agreed to it.
A good watch such as Rolek or ... with good re-sale value too and easy to sell in future.
For diamonds, the re-sale value is terrible.

I have a few questions on the selection of diamonds.
Are the various cuts unique to the brands? for example, Destinee can only be from SK and some other cuts elsewhere...
Who are the Canon and Nikons of the diamond industry.....Tiffany & Co, De Beers?
Is there a particular cut more suitable for an aged mother, middle-aged wife, young girlfriend, etc? Or any cuts can be for anyone. It is still the 4 Cs that rules.

actually no, cuts may not be unique to the brand. some are. some are not.
i.e. brilliant rose from sookee, you can find a similar cut with the leo cut. destinee from lee hwa, nothing too much special as its the normal 57-58 facet cut, tons of diamonds are cut the normal 57-58 facet way, i.e. non branded celistar from SK with no cert, true love (ideal diamonds) at SK, fuego at soo kee.. hearts on fire by tianpo.. and many more. destiny 10 or destiny royale are modified brilliant cuts, i.e. 70+ to 80+ facets, thus solely only found at lee hwa. same goes for roselle, perfect rose, celestial etc.
well.. canon = sookee and sk jewellery, both under same umbrella.
nikon = citigems, goldheart & leehwa jewellery, under the same umbrella too.
for cut wise, its all preference i know some older people they like princess cut.. whilst the younger ones like round brilliants etc.

BTW, wat happened to the post on Gabrielle diamonds? What is the difference in the brilliance between the different shapes such as heart, pear, arrow, etc?

dunno, i saw the posts then they disappeared mysteriously
international brands i'm not too familiar with unfortunately as i did most of my research hands on going down to various shops all over singapore and looking at the rocks in person.
you might want to consult the experts on pricescope forum, or take a look at bluenile or good old gold, which are popular alternatives to buying rocks from overseas.

Just to clear matters...
Color is from D to Z but beyond that there is the fancy range.
Yellow, Pink, Green, Blue, Red
Depending on the exact intensity of the color, they are priceless and cost much more than grade Ds.
Big Yellow Ones are nothing to scoff at.

there are lots of pretty rich yellow ones at larry... with a huge price tag to boot
the last time i was there i saw a nice yellow rock outlined by smaller white diamonds for a price tag of over 100k

One has to realise that unique cuts means an added premium to the diamond. Its like branding. LV design, L Lens, AFS etc etc... all added premiums to the price of the diamond
4 Cs don rule. It all depends on your budget!
Don go over your budget. A relationship is not measured by the stone (if it is then I seriously ask you to reconsider your partner. Buy what you can afford and comfortable with. You can pay to pamper her but be realistic with your budget)
Assuming the same clarity and cut
a 4 carat G color can cost 80k while the 4 carat E can cost 250k.
a 1 carat D color can cost 20k while a less than 1 carat red fancy can cost 80k.
the possible equations are endless.
if you can find a reputable jeweller (preferably via introduction from a trusted and high worth client) you can get a much better deal. Certificates are nice but they are not foolproof (we only need to look at the ratings agencies for financial products to know this).

One extra thing to note when buy diamond. U need to take note of the price bracket. As the jump is based on a range which is quite a lot.
For example anything smaller than 0.3 is under one range. Anything within 0.3 to 0.5 is under another range of price and the next jump is at 0.5 to 0.75 and so on.
So the best is to get one that is almost to the next range but not within the next range this will let u avoid the price gap of the next while u maximise ur purchase...

1) Understand that Tiffany does not use GIA or AGS, they have their own standards. True?
2) I see a lot of Solitaires being displayed in shops locally. Are the solitaires of one shop cut the same as the competitor. Or they are all cut differently?
3) Can you trade-in diamonds? eg, you bought a 0.7ct diamond from shop A. 1 year later, you bring the diamond back to trade in for a bigger 2ct diamond with cash top ups.
4) How often do you need to polish or clean the diamonds?
5) What is full value protection?
6) Does the holder set of the diamond makes a difference to the sparkle? Which material aids in the sparkle - platinum, white gold, silver?
BTW, saw that De Beers is opening shop in Marina Bay Sands.

yes this is true, you will get a tiffany cert instead

yes mostly are cut to the same brilliant 57-58 facet cut. however not all gems are equal, its good to be able to compute the holloway cut advisor rating which can give an indication on how good a rock is. additionally, there's a term called triple-ex (excellent), which is excellent cut, excellent polish and excellent symmetry. diamonds that are triple-ex and have a good HCA value of below 2 typically are very good gems, albeit may be overpriced.
but there are also other modified brilliant cuts that can be available at a premium too.
3) Can you trade-in diamonds? eg, you bought a 0.7ct diamond from shop A. 1 year later, you bring the diamond back to trade in for a bigger 2ct diamond with cash top ups.
yes for those renown shops like sk, sookee, leehwa and blahblah.. they have a "full value protection" system, which means within 2 years, with the diamond and receipt and cert you can go back to the shop and upgrade your rock to higher value one. you just have to pay the difference as the shop "takes in" your current rock at the same price you bought. above 2 years, they may chop 20% or more off the price per year there after. but do note, buy a diamond only if you are reallllly into getting it, because diamonds in reality, are quite worthless. there are some old brand shop, that even suggest aunties bring in their gold to trade for diamond.. dont. cuz gold holds its value, diamonds...dont. its good info to know that the cost of mining a carat of diamond is probably a hundred USD or less.
4) How often do you need to polish or clean the diamonds?
not often. cleaning is once in a while, i waterbath sonicate the diamond in 20% ethanol for five minutes. comes out super sparkly.

white gold or platinum is the norm these days, yellow gold may only make a mildly yellow rock look even yellower. the holder may make a difference to the sparkle, depends on how the diamond is held, the claw design and how much the rock is elevated etc. light that hits the pavillion can be redirected upwards, so if the holder covers too much of the pav, you may have a loss of some of this sparklyness
