 Oh Dear, it is now happen to me!

Just got 350D, but i cannot use my old Sigma Lens 70-200mm 2.8 ...
OH...WHAT TO DO, REALLY GO FOR RE-CHIPPING.....

CRY

Will this only affect the old sigma? I am thinking of getting a sigma 10-20 for my 350D... Since this lens is new, does anyone ever encounter any problem with 350D?

Separately, I saw from some discussions saying that sigma WA lens has AF prob with canon... However, those discussions are dated and none was specifically regarding the new 10-20... Any advice?

it is Canon protecting their turf
and rightly so
Canon should profit from their effort & money
expended in inventing and developing their camera product line

the argument can be that this sigma is an older lens
but if Canon keeps upping the ante and putting stuff into their digicam circuits
that cause another generation of sigma lens having to rechip
then it is a never ending story

in the end consumers get the message
and just buy Canon lenses

see, even when the mount is the same (sigma lens made with Canon mount)
you got protection issues
and lens cannot be used
how can the 4/3 concept of all cameras using the same mount work?

wake up and welcome to the real world.
FYI... I've had ERR99 on my 20D before and I was using a 17-40L...

I Will Bring My Sigma Len 70-200mm F2.8 To Sigma Service Counter, See What They Said, In Fact I Have Emailed To Them. Will Keep All Informed.

There are four possible reasons for the problem.

The first is compatibility -> IMHO, it comes up as the most readily acceptable excuse since every manufacturer would like to make things difficult to go third party. It is by no means conclusive as even using a EF24-70 f2.8 has given me the same problem. Which leads me to the second possible reason.

Firmware ****-up -> quite easily addressed. Just send your camera to the Canon service centre to have it checked. If nothing is wrong, they will do it for free. I'm assuming your camera is still under warranty.

Connection problem -> more troublesome to address as you'll need to send it to SIGMA AND Canon to check on it.

CF card problem -> try using a different CF card. It might yet be another compatibility issue. Personally, I've found that the error occured more frequently when using certain Sandisk CF cards. That led me to actually conclude that it was a CF card problem, until I recently sent my camera for a check-up. They found no problem with the connection, but decided to upgrade my firmware. Since then, there has not been any Err99 problem even when I use all the different CF cards.

Hope you find out the source of the problem. Cheers!

There may also be ERR99 when the shutter unit of the camera dies. ERR99 is a very general msg to tell the user that the camera cannot operate. My Sigma 400mm f5.6 can only shoot at f5.6. Any other apperatures and it will shout ERR99. It may be the case for the outdoor ERR99 cos indoor most of the time it would be at the larger apperature.

:)

Basically, ERR99 is a general error message and it's quite hard to pin-point the exact cause. Even Canon can't tell me what causes it.

Anyway, for me removing the battery and putting it back in a few seconds later does work for me... ;)

bad news. Signa claimed my 70-200mm 2.8 is old version, there is no part to convert for EOS350D used. she also claimed there is fungus on the lens, which unlikely to remove too, advise to get a new only =(

Oh dear, I tot Sigma does not support rechipping for lower-end model as the replacement cost is too low to justify, like my 70-300 APO mentioned earlier. I tot they shd at least support higher end EX model as consumer has invested quite a bit on it.

Should be very careful in buying 3rd party lens from now on.. maybe should avoid

now i think of that, it is terrible.
if i know earlier i wont buy their lens.
regret~. if they rechipped for me, then at least i have telescope lens in soft lens effect(w/fungus)..heheh;)

have you thought of shooting Manual? That should solve all the problems.

I can actually use my sigma lens indoor without any problem. Only when i took outdoor photos that the Err99 error appear. Anyone encountered similar problem before?? Pls advise :D

some talks on Err99. seems it's not confined to 350D, and it happens even with canon lense

Yes had the same error message with my 350D. Tried the pencil eraser trick to clean the contacts on my old 50/1.8 and the camera body and it seems to work. No more error messages since.

My Tokina 19-35mm got the same problem on my 10D, now sent to CP for re-chip??? They told me will send back to Tokina for service only. The shop ppl tried the Tokina on the 20D and have the same problem!...

So is it the contact problem??? Or really the compatibility issue??? :dunno:

i had the same problem with my sigma 70-300 apo too... bring it back to sigma to change some component inside (can't remember what it was)... it will cost you $130. then everything will be fine.

when upgrading, they'll clean the lens elements too. so i guess it is worth it :)

Had the same problem during a recent AD... turned on, off..took out batts, replaced them. In the end, just replaced new batts into the camera. Porblem occured once in a while after that... so i'm just hoping that all the fuss was due to low batt.

Or i'd have to send in the system for a check.

I had teh same problem last year when I bought my 350D and a Singa APO lens..but luckily, I took it back to the shop and managed to exchange for a 70-200 F4L..Good Luck !

going for the 70-200 L is a good choice... but it cost so much more than the sigma apo, right?

Hi all,

I just bought Canon 350D recently. When I equip it with my old Sigma 70-300 Lens (from previous Canon SLR), sometimes it showed Err99 error message (quite frequent in fact)... Especially taking outdoor pictures... I read the manual and it said its due to using non Canon Lens. Anyone got such problem before? Will it spoil my camera if i continue to use it? Should i get a new lens? Desperately looking for advise.

Actually Err99 can be any problem that the camera cannot determine. But the service center will be able to pin point it when they run their diagnose software.

from your description, if the error comes out more often when taking outdoor picture, it is likely that your lens' aperture blades got jammed and cannot close properly, that's what happened to my old EF 50mm/1.8, give same problem on any camera.

when shooting indoor, the aperture usually near wide open, so the blade no need to close much = less likely to jam.

when shooting outdoor, the aperture usually stop down, so the blade need to close = more likely to jam.

You can check by turning your 350D to Av mode, set to smallest aperture and press DOF button to see if there is any oil on the blades. You can also try snap a few pictures to see if Err99 occurs most often.

replace the shutter blades is costly, so dun bother to fix it since it is an old and cheap lens, time to upgrade
