Help Needed: MS Word Formatting

Hi all

Can anyone explain to me how to do the formatting in the image below? I want to have the grey alphabets in the left margin but I don't know how. Googling hasn't given me any answers.

Hmm I haven't seen anything like that, and the postitions of the letters look pretty random to me, is there a point to the alphabets? Is there something you need to do which requires you to place alphabets randomly along the side?
