Help me ! I'm addicted to primes!

You are not alone.... I am a Nikon user & I love my primes too!!!

By the way, i'm considering a 35mm f2 to complement my 50mm f1.8 and possibly a 85mm f1.8 or 100mm f2 for low light action stopping. I'll prolly hang on to my standard zoom just for the wide angle needs, though I don't shoot wide angle very often at all.

Any thoughts ? I know somebody will bring up the incredible 35L and 135L but fact is, i can't afford them. Hah

if you are using a crop body, my advise is to get a 24 mm or at most 30 mm, 35mm F2 is a bit too tight.

wow so there are alot of people who are already trapped in this proverbial abyss haha.

Perhaps some real world experience would help with insight into this. To me the advantages are obvious but I'm sure there must be a whole load of disadvantages. So for the exclusive prime users, what are your biggest frustrations when using primes ? I suppose it'll have something to do with changing lenses all the time or carrying a variety of primes ? Though i think the second point is probably neglectable since most primes are light anyways..

Prime is good, easy to use. Don't need to meddle with focal length. The lens makes decision for you. I seldom change lens or bring more than 1. At most I will just bring the 18-55mm kit lens, just in case. I just shoot what I can fit into that lens for that day.

Prime lens are not really that light, at least the decent ones aren't...

it hits everyone
dun worry,you're not alone lol

Big aperture primes, say F1.4 or F1.2 requires big glass so there's certain amount of weight to it.

Fustration? When you see a chance to take an impromptu shot and your current prime's focal length is not suitable. By the time you change lens, the chance is gone. In summary: you lose the flexibility. Also it is difficult to take photos in places without much space for you to move about, e.g. wedding photos with all the tables and chairs and subject moving, it can be difficult to keep finding space to adjust the framing and usually things changes fast and won't wait for you.

I love all my manual primes. Happily traded quality over versatility. It is important to know the strong points of your primes though, before you start to make the best of it.

hv u ever tried vintage manual lens?
it's addicted too...
i love the color of old takumar lens...
hahahaha

Oh yes, wait til you try the classic manual lenses! I got my first vivitar 28/1.9 on my 5D2, and it's been manual primes since..nikon, jupiter-9, pentax. It's kinda addictive. :)

So its truly the addictive abyss i thouht it was. Alright looks like i'll need to succumb. Haha.. now i'm just pondering whether or not i should fork out the extra $$$ for a 35mm f1.4 vs a run of the mill 35mm f2. the f1.4 is a little bit steep me thinks, considering that the f2 is at a fraction of the price; but of course aperture blades, USM and number of elements do play a parts. Oh yes and of course not to forget the L branding..

I don't think i'm quite up to mark yet with my photography to really benefit from manual lenses.. prolly gonna be abit of a pain for me to use frankly.

35mm F/1.4 is a wonderful lens. I just trade my 135 F2 to go for 70-200mm F/2.8 Mark II. It is a lovely lens. U never regret with the Mark II

But the one thing that holds me back is the convenience of zooms and superzooms, especially since I take mostly street and portraiture.

You need the 70-200 2.8 Mark II. Advantage of IS over the 85L and 135L as well.

You are not the only one. I am a prime junky too. Got myself a 24-70 (pardon, I am from the dark side) recently which is a great lens but start to have some post purchase dissonance. Mainly for the size and weight. Used to walk around and still in love with my trusted 50mm f/14 Ais (manual) and think I may go get myself an AF 50mm as vision is slowing down with aging.

I'm also addicted to prime....my current fav is the voigtlander 40mm f/2.

Prime is fav for videographer too..... :D

Primes are fun! I've got a 85mm and a 35mm/1.8, I love how sigma 30mm 1.4 looks though, can't decide if i should sell my 35mm to go to 30mm 1.4!

Lol... prime lover too.
If pocket allows, hope to get another 30mm range prime~

I am a prime lover too but my pocket is not as deep as others who can own a library of primes. Started off with a 50mm F1.4 and recently added a Sigma 30mm F1.4 that is permanently mounted to my 60D. I do have a 17-55 F2.8 which I feel really bad for neglecting it, usage is low.

Haha... bro I was in a similar predicament like you! Now the nifty-fifty is permanentlymounted on my 5Dii... :)

Primes are fun to play with that's for sure! Am looking to add the 35mmL to my collection soon.. Then it is the 24mmL, 85mm Sigma, 135mmL, etc...... Sighz... My finance minister will not be very happy... :'(

I  primes.

Only use zooms when I really have too.
