Help: ep5 and 17 f1.8 cannot focus

I have my E-PL2 for 3 years now, still works good as new. Either their reliability really went downhill after their success with M4/3s or you are really unlucky, man.

Actually most cameras last much longer before they are sold nowadays , but being electronics it's definitely a sad truth that a small % may fail within the warranty periods.

Even a car costing more than $100,000 will also fail.

Just get the system sent in to Oly and have it checked and fixed , it's never enjoyable when this happens but I'm glad in a sense that the camera is within warranty.

i do not know how well they handle customer's cameras. i am scared of those who scratches up your camera body when you send it in for repairs. mine is like new and only got out of my house twice till date.

So far my experiences with Oly SG has been very good. :) for one I'm sure u seldom hear anyone complaining of shoddy service from there.

Hope u get your camera issue resolved soon. I understand that no matter what the camera shouldn't have given u problems so early but I guess u do need to send it in since u probably won't have any peace of mind using it too.

reset the camera 3 times liao. i cannot imagine when you climb on top of mount everest and found out that your camera isn't working. reliability is so low. :thumbsd:

If you can summit Everest, camera function is the least of your worries. People can die on the way down.
Most would be smart enough to use a manual only film camera in those extreme conditions.

Edmund Hillary used a type 118 Retina I to take that famous photo of Tenzing Norgay on the summit of Everest. This is the actual camera he used, now in Otago museum, New Zealand.

First things first, have you tried to focus on something contrasty in daylight? If it works without issue, its most probably user issue and a possibility of equipment issue. But even in a situation with a lot of light and contrast and it fails to lock focus, time to bring it down to OSC

i guess so lah. i am scared of sloppy services in singapore service centers. do you know that Rolex Singapore actually treat customer's watches like dirt? heard they scratched up watches when people bring it in for servicing.

actually i cannot even use it now unless in manual mode.

I notice from your video that your AF mode is set to S-AF M. In that mode your camera will autofocus, but end up in manual focus.

It's for people who love MF but would like the AF to make acquisition quicker first. Try setting it to S-AF and see if this issue still persists.

just assuming the situation. imagine when you spend 10k on a europe trip and find that your camera is not working there. if old camera understandable. but 4 months old external just like a new camera. only 1 trip with 20 pictures taken at mbs last month. was working when i kept it in the dry box. 2nd trip bring out cannot use? things usually do not spoil like that. without impact and moisture to the camera at all.

tried s-af but problems still exist. also tried c-af and the af does not focus at all.

i tried it at clark quay at 5 pm yesterday and also at office area with lots of office lighting. it can focus and lock target like what the video is showing. but the lock down images are blurred. 100% of the pictures are not usable in af mode. i have an e-pl6 previously and took pictures at dark places during a taiwan trip and pics came out nicely.

Hm....then I have no idea...can't help here bro....

Seeing that your camera could see sharp pictures while acquiring AF, I'd say your camera thinks that that blur is clear and correct. Some sort of contrast calculation problem or something. Just a wild guess...

no bro.i tried it on all situations with 17 f1.8, 14 f 2.5, 45 f1.8, 40-150 f4-5.6. all cannot work. bring to office let my colleagues try. they also cannot use it to take any picture. one of them is doing wedding photography as part-time job.

Yeah so I was suggesting you might have a problem on the camera where it "believes" it has good focus, while it obviously isn't. And plus the fact that you tried so many lenses which I assume work on other cameras, should point the problem to your camera.

Whether sensor, or some calculation problem where the camera thinks it's clear, while it in fact isn't.

After so many replies, have you taken the camera down to Olympus for them to check/repair?
Best is if it's just a user error and quickly rectify.
Else in any case, you'll need to send in for repair.

Get it fixed and do update on what Olympus has to say.
I've recently acquire a e-m1 so am looking at your case with interest.

I am bringing down soon. but i never encounter so much trouble in my life with a camera. i might sell it off after a proper repair and change back to canon.

Ok, Time to pull everyone back together :)

Bro , without a doubt send the camera in. Simple as that. If there is an issue they will fix it, in the rare occasion u encounter problems with the staff there let me know and I can see whether I can help. I think even if now the camera is fine , u need the assurance it's fine anyway.

Erm , about Rolex. To be frank , is that here-say or your experience ? I sent in a 1951 Rolex for them to maintain just not too long ago and I was impressed with the level of service and advice they gave. Expensive the servicing may be, they managed to breathe new life into this antique watch.

Chill bro :) hope to hear from u soon about Olympus's service.

bro. i've ecountered lousy services from rolex personally. i brought down a 2 weeks old explorer 2 because rotor became loose. issue fixed but came back with 4 deep nicks on the lugs due to spring bar removal. they offered to polished up and settled the issue. went back home and found out that they actually left a piece of scotch tape pressed and screwed down with the case back. brought it back and asked them to be careful. told me ok ok then watch came back with 4 nicks on the same area on the lugs that was being polished before. offered to polish it again and the lugs look like some 2nd hand watches liao. rounded and worn. i had to sold it off at a loss and buy another new one.

i will test it out again on the weekend and send it to olympus next week if necessary.

Since you've already nailed it down to it being most likely a camera issue, just send it down to check, OSC has always been very professional in their handling of the cameras. I've never been to Rolex and I've never owned one, but could be just that service dropped when you went down, or service went up when Keith went down. Regardless, talking about it here isn't gonna solve anything right? Even if service centers don't treat their products properly when customers bring it in for repairs, what can we do? Not like we can sue them or anything, live and let live, it's just a camera. To me, as long as the thing works, I'm not too concern, my Nikon D3 has a huge scratch on the "hump" and I just covered it with gaffer tape. My E-P1 has bad scratches at the side, I just continue using.

guess i dun have a choice but to bring it down liao.

actually i do not mind scratches if they are caused by myself. but will be very annoyed if the scratches are caused by service centers trying to rectify their faulty products.

I used EP2, EP3 and now OMD never had a single problem. Sometime just sway. Hope everything well after u change a new cam.
