Travelling with the 8" Dome is a PITA!!!
But i love it when it produces 50/50s ...
another plus point is that, most curious critters and the occasional fishy comes real close to catch a glimpse of their own reflection in the dome..hopefully its not a nesting Trigger. (underwater creature portraits come impromptu sumtimes)... =)

In my opinion, if you're worried for the cost, then go for the flat ports.
If you want a long-term investment go for the domes, (but mind u, transporting them is err kinda )
oh its not so bad...the 8" dome helps keep me dry during sudden showers too. ;p

you mean the neoprene dome cover? Good for hot days too when your bobbing on the surface waiting for the boat to come pick you up.
:-)

Ya but where do you keep it during the dive?? :dunno:

there are a few ways I keep it:
1) To keep everything stream-lined, there are pocket shorts (neoprene shorts wif aquastiched pockets)
that's where i keep my SMBs, spools, wetnotes, spare mask etc. For the dome cover, i roll it slightly in half and stuff it there haha =)
2) If ure using a backplate system, some systems come with a LiftBag compartment , can also stuff there.
3) plan ur dive, watch the conditions, and don't bring the dome cover down at all (it occurs to me sometimes to leave it on the boat or on shore)
4) ok this is lame, but WEAR IT OVER UR HEAD like a Songkok, or pull the bungie and look like some Aquanaut from Russia and start doing their *crosshands, squat kicks* in water!

lost one cover for a flat port before. those things aren't cheap man. rather keep it on board and be careful till i get back on board and cover the dome again. flat ports are now covered by a wet lens.

Yea man, those "dom doms" , for the domes arent cheap...
oh btw, sry for the OT.... it was meant to be D700 + what port ...
honestly, shooting on a FX has its perks ... if you have already invested on a FX....
Don't under-compensate it with mismatched equipment....
I used to tell my fellow "bubblin' lens buddies" this theory....
"Know your equipment's capabilities, Know your environment & subject, you will Know what to bring or get"
If its affordable, and if you need it, if you think the value is well returned by its results, then get it.
If you're shooting Macro, don't bring excess weight with a FE or WA-lens(same goes for your ports) and vice versa

Rough Equation: Objective+Environment = Equipment/Setup

Oh yesh, and if i splashed the cash for a D700 and wanted to house it, i'll go for an alu housing and glass ports haha... :bsmilie:

yah but honestly...i think shooting full-frame underwater is more trouble than it's worth. i'll stick with crop sensors any day.

Not really, as you don't need to buy inferior DX lenses.
Also, no crop factor means you get exactly the field of view the lens was designed to give and better linearity as a result of...
Better tones, colour through less noise etc.
Macro advantage of cropped sensor - compensate by adding a 1.4x teleconverter.

Thanks for all the help...

I've got my housing with a 6" dome and tried it today in the pool

So happy with it

actually the crop factor does not bring your lens nearer, i just cut the view, you are still getting the same kinda magnifications. so you're losing out instead

I will go for FX anytime,

cool great!! rem to share your photos here! :D
