Please remember that the CCDs of most PnS cameras with a couple of exceptions (e.g. Fuji) are all MADE BY SONY. These CCD problems for certain models plague all brands that use the Sony CCD.

OT a bit, Nikon uses Sony sensors for all their cameras including DSLRs.

The first pix was nice. what manual mode did u play with

i am using an a630 (for about a month or so now). i needed to have a flipable screen so this was a good compromise. its a decent camera considering it is supposed to be canons 'budget/entry level' range. i like that it has full manual control so that i can learn before deciding to plunge into dSLR land. i also like that it has a decent macro mode and a minimum focus distance of 1cm. its quite versatile for what it is and for the price i paid its a value for money camera that is packed with functionality.

some sample shots from this camera to give you a feel for the picture quality. hope this helps.

I'm now overseas.

I'd replaced the CCD right before I left SG - and the cam died on me before I went into departure lounge!!

Can I just suka suka ask for upgrade to another camera (of course I'd top up the price if needed)?

My Canon 350D is giving me problems as well. It's always overexposed. And I'd brought it in for repairs too!

Not to mention that Canon SIngapore website's enquiry form isn't working now.

Sorry to dig up this thread, but just thought I'd like to share that I've had my A80 CCD replaced FOC back in Oct 07. And now, the CHANGE THE BATTERY PACK problem has come back to haunt my camera.

These are the EXACT same 2 problems that troubled my previous camera, a Canon A70 back in 2005, which led me to start this thread in Clubsnap:

http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122104

Of course, back then, Canon Singapore did a good thing and gave us a $140 upgrade to a Canon A95 (which I passed over to my gf). Now, I'm waiting with bated breath to see if there might be any reasonable remedial measures to salvage this situation with the Canon A80 as well. Of course, I understand that this camera is already 3 yrs old, but well, how often do you get the same 2 problems killing off 100s of cameras in the same manufacturing batch? There's gotta be a serious problem somewhere.

BTW, my camera before the Canon A70 was the Canon A40, which is still working to this date. I've always been a fan of Canon but these issues with my last 2 PnS cameras have been really troublesome...

Just wondering, anyone else here also faces the same problems? CCD-wise, we know for sure there're quite a lot, but anyone having the CHANGE THE BATTERY PACK problem too?

hey i happen to see this post, even though it's been months since the post, i just wanna say that i had the exact problems mentioned in the thread! change battery pack problem, batt connection no good, lcd screen spoilt, pictures turned out purplelish/pinkish, lcd died only with a few streaks of light, and can't take pictures already, e18 lens retracting error... wow! no doubt i bought it many years ago, but at $749 *the price i paid many years ago, i would expect better!!

been down to canon ss lately, quoted me $220 for repair! lol. anyway was intending to trade in for a new canon but got an S5 IS 2nd hand for a good price, so i still have the a80. i really do hope my s5 lasts for much much longer than the a80. having used other pns without vari angle lcds, i've come to realise how much i missed it!

Do u mean upgrading to another camera when u come back from overseas? I guess you could just call the css when u're back and ask them for an upgrade. i dunno if they still stock the a630, which is pretty similar to the a80, but IMO u can consider the a650 IS too, simply because it has image stabilizer =D

So what news of the 350D? did u bring it overseas? I recently bought two 2nd hand canons, an ixus 60 and an S5 IS. I do hope they don't die so soon!

Yes, I brought the 350D overseas and it's churning out 1 overexposed pic after another... I was reading some comments online and one person commented on another person who sounded like he has the same problem as me that "it's not the exposure problem but that it lacks contrast".

How can he tell??

Thanks for the tip-off about the alternative. I'm considering the S5 IS as I need my pics to be high-quality. Then again, I may need telephoto lens for my 350D (IF it gets repaired).

Is photography more expensive to maintain than a crack habit??!?

so he's saying that the 350D lacks contrast? maybe it's just his opinion. anyway if your 350d does not get repaired perhaps you could take another 350D and try to take 2 similar shots at the exact same settings and show the css people the difference and state your case again.

yep the S5 IS wld be a great choice IMO if u dont mind the slightly bigger frame compared to other compacts. has 12X zoom, IS, and able to fix on external lenses. if you need to shoot in RAW, there's always CHDK as well =D

haha well for one thing, you can't sell crack after you're done with it :p
