Help! Canon A-1 shutter won't advance!

Hello, I need some help with my Canon A-1, I just got it from my uncle, and I loaded it with new 6v batteries. The film advance lever suddenly won't advance! I pressed the battery check button and it tells me that the camera has sufficient battery. Am I in the wrong mode? Or issit a problem with the camera? Can I repair it myself? Thanks in advance!

Are you just trying out the cam's functions, or have you loaded a roll of film in? The most obvious thing I can think off is that you need to release the shutter. With most SLRs of this period, once you close the film back and advance, it will assume you have a roll of film inside, so you can advance until you get to frame #1 (look at the frame counter). After that you will need to fire off a shot before you can advance.
If you pop open the back (only if you have no film inside or have rewound!) the counter will reset.

I have alot of film cameras, so i know tt i need to put film in it, it seems tt the film advance thingy is stuck, i tried using a cable release andd still the shutter wont fire,
