Harddisk Recovery

Yup.. They told me the same thing. But they also let me know that if my target data not recovered.. then can don't accept the recovered also. Coz I think their cost is based on job complexity.. Then they won't know how much target data they can recover until their do the job.. Anyway.. I heng.. get almost all my data back.. Must remember to back up liao.

they quote me 1.5k for my 80gb, i'm ok with it.
Until i ask them what if they only managed to retrieve 1% of the data, they say will still be 1.5k since they proceed with it.

you can buy a SATA/IDE to USB convertor for $25 at sls.
can be use on 2.5 and 3.5" hard disk.

The power supply is a little under-powered for 3.5"; sometimes cannot spin-up.

usually they will do a free evaluation to determine if they can recover your data.. if they can do it, they will quote you as accordingly..

they should be able to determine what data can be recovered and what cannot..

Think my harddisk crashed. Couldn't startup my computer.
Hadn't been backing up my harddisk for about 3 months.
Any idea of any harddisk recovery service?

Hi, I do encounter hardisk crashed from time to time. Weekh, can u explain further what actually u see on your screen from the time u switch on the PC.

I ask becoz the term "hardisk crash" is generic and could mean from simply corrupted system files to physical hardisk damage.

You can confirm the worst case scenario by going to the BIOS setup and confirm if the hardisk is listed. If not listed, then only those commercial data recovery can help.

I use Paragon Hardisk Manager 2009 which has a function to create a bootable copy of the progam on CD/DVD or usb drive. From the bootable disc/drive I ran a slew of disc recovery utilities.

Anyway, to DIY or go to Specialist Shops depends on how bad you want to recover.

My approach if I have a Bad hardisk is to copy an image of the drive to another hardisk if it is able to start using Norton Ghost. In this way, you have backup copy of the hardisk, bad sector and all on the new drive. Then only will I start to recover the bad hardisk and if that drive becomes total unuseable, physical damage etc, during recovery using Paragon software etc, u could try to recover using the new backup disk.

Just got the IDE/USB thingy.... will tried tomorrow and see if I can recover the files....

It may take a few go to spin up the 3.5" hard disk. You'll hear clicking sound when the hard disk attemp to spin-up.

Hope you'll recover all your data.

Read the thread, plenty of information there. If you have no clue you better let somebody have a look with expertise, otherwise your data are really gone.

This clicking sound with older IBM hard drives was thermal recalibration. Still have a few IBM paper weights here with that sound ...

Connected the harddisk as an external harddisk using the IDE/USB cable as recommended to my Windows XP notebook.
Managed to see all the files and copy the critical files to the notebook hardisk.

Then strange things started to happen:

1. I tried to backup one more copy of the files to my SD card. After copying for some time, an error message popped out that some files cannot be copied over. Then the notebook started not to recognise the SD card. I took out the SD and and it seems ok on my camera.

2. Then my Windows XP notebook started to fail. Cannot boot up. Messages says that the windows system file is corrupted.

Could this be a virus attack?

My original PC is protected with Norton Antivirus software. The harddisk failed because Windows Vista cannot bootup.

Any idea how do I verify if my system is indeed corrupted by virus? I'm now left with a Mac notebook.

:(

Looks like 2 computers are infected; it's very likely that your SD card is also infected.

You may need a 3rd computer to remove the virus but make sure the 3rd computer is fully protected (latest virus definition) before you connect the external HDD.

Do u think it is safe to connect the HDD to my Mac notebook running on Mac OS?

If I'm not mistaken Mac notebook cannot read/write NTFS drives.

If you bring your HDD to my place, I can try and remove the virus and retrive your data.

No guarantee.

PM me if you like me to have a go.

Isn't it the other way around?
If Mac also has Antivirus software you could use it to check your Windows hard disks. But make sure the scanner is updated. Make a backup of all data that are valuable. Best desinfection from viruses is "format & re-install", everything else is rather gambling or very time consuming.

Managed to recover all my pic files simply by using the IDE/USB cable.
Thanks everyone for the tips!
