Does anyone know if there were ever any half frame cameras made with a rangefinder? Everything I've come across so far is either a SLR or scale focus. And, frankly, I'm a sucker for rangefinders!

try the classic Olympus PEN series.

I've looked at them and they are all scale focus. I'm wondering about the Canon Demi 17ee, though. No one I know seems to have any information on them, though, just what little I've seen on eBay.

But thanks for the reply! In fact, recently did acquire a PEN EE. And it's a hoot to use.

Isn't the Olympus Pen a Half frame SLR?

You can find more information about half frame cameras here: http://www.cameraquest.com/classics.htm. I know that the russians made some half frame cameras too.

IMO, half frame cameras arn't worth the time. It's harder to scan, produces a smaller neg (and thus, less detail on the picture) and may run into some problems when you process. Not worth the time. Besides, why settle for half when you can get the full 35mm size?

PEN F & PEN FT are SLRs. And they are getting a bit steep in cost.

BTW, I emailed Stephen Gandy at CAMERAQUEST & he is unaware of any rangefinder half frames. But he said he wouldn't be too surprised if some are out there, over and above the Nikon & Leica specialty made ones.

I'm very sure the Russians made some, thought not in large quantities. And reliability might be an issue too.

Here are a few half frame cameras,

Yeah, I know about this one, but I'm looking for a user & I suspect repairs might be a "bit" pricey if not impossible to find.

BTW, Does anyone know if the Canon Demi 17ee is a rangefinder and not scale focus?

Thanks, folks!
