Guidance needed for 50mm F1.8

Is this lens able to auto focus using D40 body?

At the present moment, I don't think there is a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 lens with the built-in motor (i.e. AF-S nomenclature). So therefore it wouldn't auto-focus with the D40, sad to say...
Have patience! I think Nikon MIGHT build one, though the price would be much higher than the $180 or so that it costs new, presently.

I thought f-stop is inverse of aperture. The term f-stop should be referring to the number. So bigger f-stop or f-number = smaller aperture. No? :dunno:
normally we say big f stop lens, we are referring to lens with big aperture (hole), so clearly f1.4 has bigger f-stop than f2. numbers are smaller (actually is inversed) but hole are bigger.

TS mentioned
if i shoot at bigger Fs, shutter is slow and picture blur cos of handshake;
, which mean he is actually referring to a smaller "hole" (aperture), he got it mixed up liao.

Diameter of the aperture is given by (focal length)/(f-number).

Which also explains the notation f/1.2, f/1.4, f/1.8, etc.

50mm f/1.8 can't autofocus with D40/x or D60.

at f2 shot recently. its a great cheap lens. no regrets.. i can sell of all my lenses but not my 50mm :D

Sigh...thx for the replies...I'll probably wait for either an AF-S 50mm or upgrade body to a D90 or D300 then....

Upgrade!!! :)
now that the economy is not doing too well, we should all do our part and SPEND SPEND SPEND! That will boost the economy! :)

i meant bigger Fs number as in smaller aperture; sorry for any confusion caused;

so in low light ( eg: food court at 3 level vivocity or any dimly lit cafe ), when i need to use f1.8 but the shallow DOF results

1)in some parts of the face out of focus or
2)2 out of 3 person out of focus;

what should i do if i dont wanna use the flash?

thanks again;

The people who caused the slump are the speculators. Why feed their pocket? They deserve it if they get burnt and go bust. All thanks to them for the rising prices of our daily needs. They do not deserve our sympathy.

The people we need to sympathise with are those uncles and aunties who got conned of their entire savings because the banks pester them to invest and promised them good returns. Very unscrupulous. The customer service people stand behind you when you're withdrawing money and glance at your account balance and approach you when they see more than 5 digit in the balance screen.

Ok.. enough of OT. ;p

there are some limitation of how normal available light photography can go, just work with in it you will be fine.

if anyone die die must try to shoot with low light when normal camera and lens can't do it anymore, can always try with it Night Vision Equipment.

1. try higher ISO to allow smaller aperture e.g. f/4?
2. move back
3. put subject(s) at same distance from lens (basically objects at the same distance should be equally sharp)

Borrow the thread a bit... I need some advice too: my 50/1.8 is backfocusing on my D90 :( Anything can be done to adjust the lens? My 18-70 focuses fine.

I am using d60 and i tried manual focusing and it just doesn't focus well unless you use the indicator which i did not as i use M mode. what you meant by abide by 1/focal length?

I think need to upgrade to 5D mark II LOL
but budget tight as a student somemore no income

One rule (but by no means the only reliable rule) about sharpness is to shoot at a shutter speed that's equivalent or faster to the reciprocal of the shutter length without using a flash (of course). So, for the 50/1.8, you generally should get sharper pictures at shutter speeds >= 1/50s than slower speeds.
