Groupon Deals Photographers

i saw $18 studio shoot before... even my studio rental is more than $18.. LOL

this groupon thing only benefits themselves (earning half or more from each coupon sale) and the consumers (to a certain extent depends on their expecation).

it doesn't benefits the business at all.

It took advantage of the 'band wagon' phenonmenon.

many business mistook it as the next big advertising feat, jumped on, fell off, leaving their money and goods on someone's wagon.

Of course not many photographer are willing to featured the deals at groupon cos the profit margin is far too low for them. For starters(not newbie in pg), its a very good experience though. Cos u will really felt pleasure during the shoot. Its different from tagging along with mentor as u don't feel pleasure at all. U can hav a lot of idea for the shoot as a observer, but is a different story if u are alone as a shooter. And that trains u to handle a lot of things and situation in different scenerio. And I really mean a lot of unexpected situation u can never think of. Its a nightmare in the beggining, but as time goes by, after more than 100 assignments, once u are able to improvise on wherever u go without stress, I believe u are able to see ur improvement. For me, I prefer practical lesson than theory. Thinking back, I am still happy with what I did. However. No more in future. Unless there is a better deal for me.

Advise for starters to start off as a groupon outdoor pg:

- Limit ur location for the shoot. Else u will be like me, my underwear is wet every day. As clients will not think of ur convenient, if they required u to shoot at tuas(I stayed Tampines), you got to do it.

- limit ur deals with groupon. They don't give a **** on whether u can handle it after u signed their agreement. As u will be responsible for any faults if u can't handle ur job. I did not limit, that's why I got 6 hell months to complete 600+ deals

- be prepare for no weekends. All client especially family only available on weekends.

- my dslr burst to 70k shutter clicks. If u are not worry of changing another shutter. Go ahead. Just be prepare.

- make sure groupon don't feature hardcopies and unlimited softcopies. U will need to earn extra. Hence, come up with a package for extra softcopies.

- black and white. Aliases through email. As u need for ref. Not all phone calls. I've been sue once. And I need to answer to CASE and STB for what happen. Luckily I hav the black and white. And I won the case.

I can't think of what else to advise. As there are too much things encountered. U may question me if u have other enquiry.

I do not advise being a groupon pg is a good way for marketing. However, its a good experience.

Thanx for sharing Andy.

I do not think it will be a good experience or way to learn pro photography but I say you find it a good experience it's probably due to a very positive spirit to maximise your learning, making lemonade out of lemons.

One bad thing I think could had result from such learning is that you are conditioning your mind to deal with possibly larger numbers of demanding low paying clients with high expectations. It might shape certain way you do things which may actually be detrimental to a different clientelle.

theandycreation, I did not think Groupon will allow you to limit the number of packages. They want to maximize their profit, so they will not bother about your ability to deliver.

Yes, they will.... however, subjected to reason, price margin and how much limit you asking for, before they approve.. of course, you got the point, they wanna earn too..
