Sounds cool. How much did it cost in S$ for this entire setup? Also is it easy to install in car or do we need to go to workshop etc? Cheers.

out of the box and use.....must load Malsing maps urself...;p

I m planning to buy the Nokia 6110. Can the free maps (eg Garmin or malsingmap) be downloaded onto the handphone?

thanks axela.

wow...expensive ...at $690 soon these stand alone devices will be redundant coz the mobile phones like 6110 which have an excellent navigation capability will kick in to offer far better value. handphone + GPS nav ....that too less than $600! soon most mobile manufacturers will integrate gps into their handsets...give it another 3-6 months...

Nuvi 310 with TTS is $690 without maps...with add $200, from malsing maps will be free..:D

Mobile cannot fight.....my n95 also never use the Gps...dedicated the best!

I bought a Garmin GPS 10 and connected it to my Palm TX via bluetooth. Downloaded free navigation software from Garmin and free maps from malsingmaps. Never leave home without it.

Traveled to port dickson and drove around KL and PJ with it. Excellent stuff!!!

but that's because the N95 has a very inferior version of the navigation system....try the 6110...this has a different version and i found it fanstastic and comparable if not better than the dedicated systems....also bundled into the phone so you get to buy phone & get the entire gps capability. Mark my words...the dedicated boys are going to sweat once all the mobiles start to have this which is very soon and prices will come zooming down if they wish to stay afloat. just my humble opinion...

but what about battery life of 6110 as compared to dedicate GPS?

Yes, that's a drawback. But hey ... do u really need to switch on GPS each time u start ur car!?? Of course not right!?! only for the new routes or for a different route that you are uncertain of....unless u want to impress someone in the car by turning on GPS to go home from your office etc which you would already know like the back of your hand. Also 6110 i heard comes with a std accessory of a lighter adaptor charger to insert in the car...charge on the move while using GPS...in which case they would have killed the limited battery life issue already!! :)

I juz feel the dedicated units are far too overpriced. I would not mind paying about $300-350 for a nice dedicated unit, beyond that I see more value in buying a nice mobile with GPS.

Cheers. ;)

For a car, I would suggest an onboard dedicated Car GPS which has a big screen as you're concentrating on driving and it will not be optimal to squint for a small display

The Nokia 6110 navigator is more for walking GPS device.

If you find that the 6110 navigator is good to go for your car GPS navigation, there's no one stopping you from using it.

Personally for me, I'll take the big screen car GPS anyday for the car.

I'm using MapKing on my Treo750 + BT GPS device (which cost me around $120). Have using Garmin Que (Malsing map) before but still prefer the interface provided by MapKing.

If you are using for your phone for GPS, you should consider getting a car charger. ;)

fully agreed:thumbsup:

A few questions abt the Nokia 6110 since i m thinking of getting one:

1. Where do u get the maps from? Free or have to buy?

2. I hear it may take up to 10 mins to get a satt reading? Is that true?

3. Lastly, the best price I got so far is $670. Anywhere else selling cheaper?

Thanks :)

Do u really need to look at the screen all the time especially when there is a voice prompt telling you exactly where to go, what to do, where to turn, etc?!! I hardly ever needed to look at the screen once my route was plotted before starting my journey...the voice prompt talked me through it all.

I used the 6110 in my car and it was simply great, effortless for most of my journeys, and the compactness in fact made it even more attractive for me. Topping up is the fact that I can also use it to talk!! :)

I have nothing against the big screen units or the dedicated ones, they're good too I am sure. Just that they are far more overpriced than they should intrinsically be, guess just because they thought they could ride a wave. When a mobile phone can offer the same tech, the dedicated units need to like at least halve their selling prices.

Cheers mate, each to his own I guess...whatever floats whosoever's boat! haha :)

Hi astroboy,

1. I was using a friends 6110 so not sure where he got the maps from...u can check that with Nokia or your TSP. Apparently i think Nokia bundles them into the handset because they also own Mapking (or Mapquest!??).

2. My 6110 locked position from cold startup in under 2mins.

3. Refer #1, so not sure about the price.

Cheers.

Always wanted to have a GPS with me...cos I am a lost sheep when it comes to Tuas area...but with the variety of choices...I was really dunno which to get. Was looking at those delicate GPS but price kinda put me off...$800-$1000 for a GPS that does GPS, play back MP3/MP4 and jpeg files (other than GPS function the rest I have no need for it).

My friend loan me his Garmin set which I tried...not bad. I like it but not the price. The other thing was that it need to be mounted on the windscreen cos the GPS sat need line of sight to work and my windscreen kinda steeply raked...so have to mount it quite far up. But this is a small issue.

Then I tried those BT receiver with a PDA smartphone...work just as well...

So, I bought a Houlex BT Receiver...a PDA phone (cos my old Palm 5 kaput and Motorola V3X went ting tong)...whole investment was only 1.5K (thereabout)

I got a PDA that can read/send email, Wifi enabled, phone, GPS and after office hours its my game boy !! I think its more worth it than spend 800 bucks for a GPS only.

Anyone checked out the one from eastgear? Brand is G-Nav (GPS-35B). I tried it out at the shop last week and found the user interface quite friendly. It has a 3.5" screen. Also quite reasonable price at $599 with Mapking Spore and Msia maps installed.

Personally I dont think I will like using the small screens of mobile phones for navigation when I drive. But it's nice to have when walking around though.
