Hi,

I currently have a Canon 30D with EFS 10-22mm and EF28-135mm IS. I am satisfied with the EF28-135mm IS zoom range, however, I realized to this is a very slow lens and the image is very soft. Therefore I am thinking of buying new better zoom lens. Any good suggestion?

Thank you a lot,

PS: I intend to stick with crop frame camera, and not going to upgrade to FF very soon

17-55, add another 135L.

Since you have 10-22 and not satisfied with 28-135, maybe you can consider Sigma 50-150 f2.8.

Was going to suggest 70 - 200mm canon's but again 22 to 70mm seems quite a gap in your focal range.

22 to 50mm's gap is smaller and f2.8 will be useful.

I wouldn't consider a 70-200 a general purpose lens, but of course it depends on your shooting style.

I would recommend the Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS USM, or the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS HSM.

Depends on individual to individual.

I use the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 for landscapes,
Sigma 30mm f1.4 for casual walkabout and
70-200L for street/events/sports/outdoor strobist portraits

The 70-200 is stays on my body about half of the time.

how about the 24-105mm lens?
Does the combo 10-22 + 17-55 + 70-200 sound good? Money again ...

24-105L is not wide enough for crop body.

then again, that's just me~

Depends on 1) Do you need f 2.8
2) Budget
3) Do you like changing lens often.

If you f4 is sufficient then 10-22 + 24-105 makes a good pair.

I've been a 450D user since 2008 with a 24-105L, I suppose from reviews its one of the sharpest lens around, fast focus and a constant F4? You could pair your 10-22mm with the 24-105, but well that would effectively replace your 28-135

one more for 24-105

It will nicely complement your 10-22

Some suggestions are:
1. Canon 17-55 f/2.8
2. Canon 24-70 f/2.8
3. Canon 24-105 f/4
4. Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM
5. Tamron 17-50 f2.8

All are good.

Depends on your budget…

EF-S 17-55mm or EF-S 15-85mm are good choice for crop…

EF 24-105mm L or EF 17-40mm L … if having the Red Ring is important to you…

Tammy 17-50mm (non VR) is best for limited budget…

You like the 28-135 range, wants a faster lens, and sharper image. Like-for-like, 24-105 ticks all the boxes for what you want.

15-85mm IS for general walkabout lens or 17-55mm IS if u shoot in low light often?
I very satisfied with my 15-85mm as it wide enough (for me) and the zoom range is acceptable for general use.

16-35 is wide angle, it is more suitable for FF I think.

How does the 24-105mm perform in low light? Compare between 10-22mm and 28-135mm at f/3.5 in low light, 10-22mm always gives me sharper image, is there something wrong with my 28-135mm?

24-105mm is a f/4 lens... so low light can not be compared to 24-70 or such but should be better than the two you mentioned.

28-135mm is a very old and just average lens. It was hyped too much just because of it's very versatile range on film and FF. It has a questionable IS of first generation. I got this lens as my kit.. was with me for 3+ years but hardly used more than 10 times until I disposed it. Compared to 28-135mm, 24-105mm is a much superior lens. The only lens that beat this lens in IQ is probably 24-70. There has been an eternal discussion between these two lenses, i.e 24-105mm Vs 24-70. Search in google or this forum... there are too many discussion about these two lenses... both has equal numbers of admirer.
