Good line of lens to have?

I was quite curious how come no one post Marco lens to complete the line? I think I am the only who mention marco lens

Like some bros said before, not everyone goes to macro. I also (currently) has no intention to explore macro world (I love to shoot beautiful face than weird insect looks :p ). But maybe someday I will change my thinking. Previously, I don't like prime coz limiting my move by their fixed focal length. But after saw pics taken with my friend with her superb 85mm Zeiss , now I'm start thinking to explore it.

ya 5:1 is really something worth considering. btw is it sold in local store? if yes wat will be the street price like and where carry this lens??

sorry, since I'm blur-blur about macro, what the meaning of 5:1? You mean you can capture bee's eyes? (I already study the meaning of 1:1 :p)

It's time for me to say: Please see my signature! ;)

Hahaha... interesting, I have a very similar line-up in terms of focal length. But I have a few primes thrown in there for the mix.

i) Sigma 12-24
ii) Canon 24-70
iii) Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS
iv) Canon 35L
v) Canon 85 f/1.8
vi) Canon 100 f/2.8 Macro
vii) Kenko 1.4x TC

This basically serves 99% of all the shooting I ever indulge in. Only thing which might be missing is a long super-tele say 300mm and more.

Hopefully can get the funds by Airshow '10 for one... :p

1:1 is 1x life size...

1:2 is 0.5x life size..

5:1 is 5x life size..

there some who don't use dedicated macro lens try to add in extension tube, closeup filter(eg. Raynox) to increase Magnification

This MPE65 is a macro lens which has the abilities to magnified 5x more then a common macro lens.

To ans your question, yes it shd allow you to see more detail even on the eye if you use it correctly.

Local street price is around $1500, but the lens is almost useless without the MT-24EX which is about $1100. So the whole setup is about $2600 if you want to go into it. But I will say, it is worth the price.

This snail is the size of a letter "a" at font size 12. DOF is super shallow even at F16. This is at 2x magnification. I am 3 inch away from the subject.
The way to focus is to move your entire lens forward or backward until you reach the critical focusing point. BTW, you might need to change your focusing screen to a "Matt" focusing screen to help you to focus.

this thread is disgusting. recommending trinity L-glasses to someone who just started out with 18-55 and 50/1.8...

let me be more realistic:

get EF-S 55-250 IS first to get telephoto range

18-55 and 55-250 IS should last you for a while. start saving for better glasses... in the mean time.

then much later on.. u might consider selling your 18-55 off (for $100) and getting tamron 17-50 (for $500) you could get ef-s 17-55 IS ($1.2k), but honestly, that stuff is too expensive...
then you might wanna replace your 55-250 IS (sell for $320) with 70-200 f4 L IS... this is expensive though (1.5k) so it might take you some time...

Nice suggestion:thumbsup:...newbie also and has the ff lens: kit lens 18-55IS, 55-250IS, 50mm f2.8II and 580exII.... no plans to upgrade for now...try to learn more and save more...;)

But too bad most people here just recommend him to BUY BUY BUY, which defeat the purpose of learning from basic

Who says? It will be better if you can borrow. And it will be much much better if you no need to return it. ;)

Beginner can only use entry level equipment? Why? So when people pass their driving, they cannot drive BMW, but must start to drive Picanto first? Strange theory.:dunno: Better equipment cannot learn basic according to your statement. (BTW, how you know TS have not master the basic?)

As a very seasoned photographer, I agree with every comment made by Wai on this thread.

However, I can never understand why people put equipment list on their signatures like computer specs on hardwarezone, nor the ignorance of wise comments from seasoned photographers that might be in contrary to today's clubsnap common belief that good photos can only be produced by "professional" lenses.

But as per your car theory, anyone can drive a BMW. But I dont see how one can appreciate a BMW engine without understanding the "frustrations" of a lesser car.

Hi im a newbie to the world of photography. Im currently using Canon 500D, 18-55mm kit lens and a 50mm F1.8 II lens. What other good lenses should i get to cover the different aspects/range in photography? Thanks :D

You need to start assessing your photos and find your area of interest before getting more lenses. What's wrong with the 18-55 and 50? Not wide enough? Not long enough? Not fast enough? It always starts from the photos you take because there isn't much point in getting a dozen lenses only to find that you don't even need them to start with.

The lenses you have is already good for general photography which can cover a range of genre. When you have learnt to use these lenses well, you don't even have to ask what to get next. You just know.

Since our friend is beginner having a cropped body. I would recommend the following:

1. Canon EFS 10-22mm F/3.5-4.5 - for your wide angle needs
2. Canon EFS 55-250mm F/4-5.6 - for zoo outings.... and nature photography
3. HOYA Close-up filter +4 - for your macro experimentations

Cheers

Mahathir

180? Tamron or Canon?

heard from frz that Tamron 180 3.5 is quite an amazing lens. I might get one since I have already have Sigma 150mm for 4/3

Err sorry.... should have stated properly.... EF 180mm f3.5 Macro L USM

Hi Bro.. do you think the MT-14EX could light up the subject as well when using the MPE65 ?? I'm using EF 100mm Macro right now with MT-14EX .... but is interested in trying to shoot with 5X magnification..... I read that at 5X, a lot of light is needed... is that true. Thxs

Yea, I agree with raingrove =)

Please don't ask him to buy higher end lenses when he's just started out photography..

I too started with a 450D, 18-55 kit and 50F1.8.. Used it for about 1yr, learning along the way. When light wasn't enough, I would use the 50mm stopped down to abt 2.8..

Soon, you would (probably la..) realse the limitations of your lenses, and then you can really know wat you want to buy.. Like the next lens I got was the EFS55-250, realised that kit lens 55mm not enough reach, esp at zoo/bird park, etc..

Using the 18-55, 50, 55-250, I was pretty contented with shots I got.. Although indoors, when there's low light, the 18-55 wasnt fast enough, and the 50mm not wide enough, that's when I decided to buy a canon 17-55 and a 430EXII.. Never looked back from then.. Love the 17-55!!

I've since got a couple more other stuff, but the main point is that I dont think you should spend the $$ (i assumed hard earned/saved), until you know what you want.. And when that time comes, you could consider 2nd hand to save $$ too..

Good luck and enjoy shooting!!

Good line of lenses to have for you?
18-55 IS, 50 1.8 :)
Yes, you have it already.

Good line of lenses to have for me?
17-40L, 50 1.4, 70-200 2.8L IS
And yes, I have it already.

Just get a 55-250 IS if you need telephoto on a budget.

And if you shoot indoors often, 430EXII hotshoe flash.

Do you need to eat grass to understand how rice taste?:dunno: Do you need to stay in Kampong to appreciate HDB flats? If I have the money why will I waste time trying out a lesser car?

The unique feature of the MT-24EX is the adjustable twin flash which can direct the light which ever way you want it. It also have a pre-flash light that can light up your subject to help you focus. And yes at 5X magnification you need lots of light. At F16 and above also need lots of light

For Mt-14ex, when you subject is so close at 5x mag. The ring light will miss the subject and sometimes create unwanted shadows
