Hi,

Which is good for video for making short docu/films and
photography

Budget is below S$1,000 with necessary lens

plse advise on what lens to buy.

Decide between:

EF-M for Canon EOS M kit II 560 - is it good enough?
III $900

Portability is highly valued, hence I decided against DSLR 100d ($1000).

My former camera was compact Canon G15(stolen) and now having to buy another.

A good mirrorless camera that is excellent for making short docu/film will be the panasonic GH3, or the just released panasonic GH4, but that is probably out of your budget. They have been used professionally for such purposes. Lots of lenses to chose from too.

What lenses do the kits come with? Personally am unfamiliar with the EOS-M but I read DeeJay Scharton's www.dslrfilmnoob.com blog now and then. Noticed he had a recent post about the EOS-M. Perhaps you might like to take a look at that.

Yes, EOS-M is a good choice. It is basically a 650D in a smaller body. AF is not as fast as many mirrorless camera out there for stills. If you are bend in buying the EOS-M, I think it is a good choice to get kit III. And I think street price is going to be lower than the 899 (SRP).

Street price for 100D with kit lens is lower then $1k, now sure price now, checked while ago think ard $800+.
And I feel it very light weight.

For video u may want something with IS if u holding it hand held & walking ard. maybe zoom lens too? One with mic input so can plug external mic? (maybe gd to have headphone if possible)
If not wrong eos M kit2 come with 22mm lens which it prime lens without IS? The body is decent for video, it has mic input jack.

Or the canon 700D if u dun mind slightly bigger size, has a tilted screen which useful for video. The street price with the 18-55kit lens is less than $1k. Think price had dropped.

Heh heh, lighter the better(so not 700D,100D) EOS M can shoot and run. Portability is what I rate highly. Family can use, as convenient to carry.


Yah, $560, price can get only EF22stm & adapter, so if want zoom lens EF-M 18-55mm, US200, must buy separately.

Do I need image stabilisation - video usually on tripod.

Er... Actually, if you would not consider 100D because of its bulk... then why consider the Panasonic GH3 which is bigger?

GH3 (suggested by another poster) definitely doesn't fall within the budget (below S$1,000 with necessary lens), so I doubt TS will consider it. That said, you're right, even the G6 is about similar size with the 100D too I just thought that it's still a worthwhile option if TS does decides to compromise on the size, as the articulated screen + headphone jack are essentials for basic video work.

TS - if your chief criteria are portability and weight, then a mirrorless set-up should be the way to go. Easier to use legacy lenses too, which I suppose are easier to MF during video.

I would actually recommend a Sony Nex machine if you are open to it as well. With the kit lens 16-50 which has stabilisation and power zoom, you have a pretty good starter package for video and stills. Much has been said about the Sony mirrorless cameras' video functions too. Mostly positive.

Attracted to Sony cos it's the slimmest when the zoom lenses retracts - beats fujifilm, panasonic, Olympus OMD, Nikon hands down.
I could use a pancake lens for the other brands but cost extra - like $200-$400 to buy one.

Which is bang for buck, below 1k, all in with needed lens. After Sony, the next brand which is slimmest?
Must have great portability(short nose is even better - achieved by pancake lens) - a must.

Dont need a Nex 7 bro. You can easily do with a Nex 5T which should cost $899 or even lower since it should be replaced by the A5000 soon. The lower end Nex models have the pancake 16-50mm kit lenses which should fit your purpose just nice.

Im sure the OMD EM10, with its pancake 14-42 kit zoom, would have a pretty small profile too. It should come in somewhere around $1k. That said, I still think Sony's video capabilities are better than Olympus.

Maybe you can consider a Panasonic but I dont know that much about Panasonics.

For family shots and fuss-free use.

Any fits the bill, plus 1k budget for all including lenses and very slim form factor.

Nex 6 kit. Same one I'm using. But not very sure how much it costs with the kit lens. I would expect the prices to have dropped since the eagerly anticipated A6000 is reaching Singapore soon. =)

None of the current CSCs really qualify as 'very slim', as once you throw a lens on (even a pancake), you're looking at a minimum of 5-6 cm at the thickest point. To be honest, what you're looking sounds like a mythical beast that may not exist yet.

Panasonic Micro Four Thirds are excellent at video.

My take:

Panasonic GH3, seems the choice becos of its video and filmic quaility video capability.
Has built in flash and horseshoe and ext mike jack.
Although it doesn't have Image stabilisation on the body only on its lens.

Olympus OMD seems a close choice.
