hi shuy,
i am also new to dslr and considering getting the D90.

my friend recommended either the 18-55 / 55-200 kit lens or getting a Sigma 18-200 OS.
in the end it'll come up to roughly the same price.

thought abt getting the 18-200 nikon VR, but the price is a little steep.

anyone with advice on this?

tried the kit lens 18-105mm first..

my guess is that u will rarely shoot after the 105mm range..

What's wrong with the kit lens? 18-105 VR seems like a good range. :dunno:

My opinion is try the kit lens first then decide later. It seems good enough for normal shooting situation. :)

hmmm i am thinking of getting D90 this coming friday. Maybe i would get the kit 18-105 lens then sell it and get a 18-200mm? well i still have a few days to think about it.

Why go through the trouble of selling the 18-105 lens when you can just get the D90 (body only) and then get the 18-200mm lens together with it?

I'm new to DSLR too, just got mine last week, but like most of us here mentioned, the 18-105mm Lens is really versatile. Me really like it too.

Seriously, just get the kit lens.

You're just beginning. And it'll help you save. And it's not like it's a bad lens or something.

If you want a versatile lens, the 18-105mm kit lens is a great choice.
Useful for a variety of shooting situations with its range.

shooting situation really depend on what is required.... but it is a good lens to start with if user dnt knw what is suitable... it can be use to determine what is really missing before putting money to get a lens to user requirement :)

I agree with most of the posts, that USUALLY you'll find no need to shoot at a longer focal length than 105mm.
Especially with a cropped body like the D90, the field-of-view at 105mm is equivalent to almost 160mm on a film SLR.

Therefore, the extra reach you gain from changing an 18-105 to an 18-200 is quite often redundant.
I said often, not always! :) It really depends on your subjects. Maybe you like to shoot general scenery AND animals in the safari! :)

The 18-200 is certainly more solidly-constructed, but it's also a helluvalot more expensive and heavier.
The 18-55 is super-light, but I don't like the flimsy construction and the lack of internal focusing. Also, the max focal length of 55mm might be too short on some occasions.

Stick with the kit lens first, you'll be surprised how good it is. I owned the kit lens myself and am very happy with it. Since you just started out, its good to try out a general lens, which the 18-105mm lens will be able give u a variety of angles to play with. In the long run, when you know what sort of shots you are interested in, you may consider getting a dedicated lens for eg. Don't rush in to buy for the sake of buying. Some ppl like to shoot wildlife, some portraits, some macro.. discover what you enjoy.. you can decide later.

Cheers!

Just to add my 2 cents worth.

I bought my D90 a couple of months ago with the 18-105mm kit lens and went straight for a tour. I must say that the kit lens is a very good travel lens as it covers a pretty comprehensive range. And if you want, you can even get the 18-200mm DX lens for travelling purposes to cover a longer range.

Worry about the next lens later.

I am new to DSLR too. Got my D90 with 18-105 lens in Oct if not mistaken. Went traveling and shot at least 700 photos. less than 1% is shot at 105mm :) Anyway if i have the budget, wouldn't mind buying 18-200 for convenience sake. You'll never know when you need the "reach"

i am D90 + 18-200VRII user.

I can advise you that you try out the 18-105VR first. Most pics won't be more than 105 unless you really have the habbit of shooting far. Moreover, the resale value of this lens i suppose is high.

i use the Nikon D90 + AFS 18-200MM VR, overall it is a good lens... u can search in the B&S sub forum to find a 2nd one..

i'd still recommend going with the kit lens 18-105mm. It's got a good focal range and decent optical quality. If your friends are mainly PnS or prosumer users, they'll already be blown away by the image quality from your D90 kit! If you find that you take a lot of portraits, or landscapes, you can trade off the 18-105, or keep it as a travel lens and buy primes.

for landscapes, which are the prime lens to recommend from nikkor range ?

Get the D90 with 18-105 kit lens. Seriously the 18-105 is good. Unless you have something against it, then consider others.

A cheap and usable prime will be 50 f1.8.
For landscapes, most photographers tend to use wide angle lenses. You can try 35 f2 or 24/20 f2.8. You can also look at telephoto primes.

personally i use the 35mm f2 for my d90 almost all the time.

small and light.

I suggest not getting the kit lens if you can buy the body only and if you are sure you are serious about photography and will continue doing it for the long run.

I started with the kit lens when it launch in late Sept and bought other lens in Dec. Believe me, my kit lens is now collecting dust. The quality of the shots is fine but I find the colour is just not good enough. No doubt, in terms of kit lens, it's one of the better ones compared to others but still couldn't compare with lens that you need to pay separately.

Hope this helps

18-105mm is a good lens to start with. Good for beginners who wanna try, experiment and learn. I dun recommend prime lenses unless u really know exactly wat u want.

18-200mm is more like a walk-around lens for people who do not want the hussle of carrying and changing too many lenses (eg. overseas, etc). U enjoy the versatility but I guess u may lose out on IQ.

Have fun!

How come no one mentioned the 18-70? Fast and sharp...only lower focal range and no vr. But CHEAP!

Aha...i think its probably that you don't know what you want thats why ppl will settle for a zoom lens. When i first started, the idea of using prime lens is daunting. Upon buying my first, the 50mm f1.8, its half the time on my cam body...encourages you to compose and improve the usage of your zooms.

Try it and you'll know wat i mean.
