Good Canon Lens

so in that case, what the actual reason. EF-S lens is better than normal EF lens?

EF-S is not better per se. EF-S merely stands for ElectroFocus-Short. The distance from the rear element to the sensor is shorter, thus minimising the material cost, as you no longer have to manufacture a 17mm lens for 35mm, but just for 1.6x crop.

In a nutshell, you can only use EF-S lenses on the following 1.6x crop cameras: 300D, 350D, 400D, 20D, 30D, 40D. They cannot be mounted on the 10D (except with modification done to the lens, at user's risk), 1D series, and 1Ds series.

Whether you mount an EF lens or an EF-S lens on your camera body, what you see in the Viewfinder (VF) is what you get (there will be some difference because the viewfinder is not a 100% coverage VF, but a 97 or 98% coverage VF).

Whether you mount an EF lens or an EF-S lens on your camera body, all focal lengths will still be subject to the 1.6x crop factor. Hence, a 100mm EF-S lens on your 40D will give a Field of View similar to a 160mm lens on 35mm format, while a 100mm EF lens will do the same thing.

:D hey calebk,

Too heavy lah ;p It's a holiday, not photography expedition. I still need to set aside space for shopping and other stuff ;p

U could get a cruise cum land tour package. Cost from $4k+ per pax for a 2 week package including airfare and hotel stay in Vancouver/Anchorage.

From the sound of it...looks like 400mm f5.6L is the choice. It is light and reach 400mm x 1.3. I used it on my Mark II N before selling my cam on the dragon boat race at Singapore River last month. Good quality I must say.

now i know who to go zoo with. i didn't know a cannon was that sharp... 10k!

Hi Guys,

You know what, I used the 70-200 f2.8L IS with a 1.4TC on all my zoo pictures...can take a look at my website and you will know the results. Shoot at f8 and above would produce wonderful results. But of course, I agree the longer the range the better. Actually 500mm f4L would be more ideal than the 600mm f4L both with IS, at least the 500mm is hand holdable for some of us! But of course it is very expensive! So I still feel that 400mm f5.6L will do a good job.

TS is on 1.6x crop, not 1.3x.

You do realise that TS is on quite a tight budget, don't you? What's the point in recommending such extravagant gear?

Yes for tight budget I would recommend the 400 f5.6L. For longer term and saving $$$ you should get the 500mm f4L. This may sound ridiculous but I have seen people buying the 400mm and selling it for half a price and then get the 500mm afterwards, so you got to make your own thinking and decision. If you intend to sell it later, then my suggestion is to get the 500mm, you will have to save $$$ for a period of course or possibly get a secondhand at 4-5K wihout IS. Ultimately you got to think what you really want?

:)

I think the only real option is ther 400 f/5.6, which is at least retailing for around 1.8k. The 500 f/4L, assuming you even find a secondhand unit, already costs 4-5k, and I don't think TS has that kind of monetary power.

Thanks for the suggestion!
