Hey guys,

I am actually going overseas in december, and I was wondering where I could get xray safe film bags in Singapore? Or does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Actually, I carry it on my body and when going through the gate, I show the officer the canister inside and she let me off the bag scanner for my films. I didn't bring much also, only 2 rolls of b&w and 4 rolls of slides. You can try, but no guarantee the officer is the same understanding person.

I travel almost every week and put my both film in my check in & carry on, so far no problems, as you can see from my postings. No fogging, no issues. Only thing is, to be safe, if you are carrying anything over asa 800, I would ask for hand inspection and not even put the film through the scanner.

Cathy has the lead bag for films, i got mine there, 3 sizes if i remembered correctly:)

It is best to put all the film without box in a transparent plastic bag to let them hand check. You can put the film in the transparent/transulent container if you have. Used to do this in the film days. So far no problem except some airport insist on puting them into the X-ray machine.
With the Film Lead bag, when pass through the X-ray machine, if they cannot see what inside, they will increase the X-ray, thus, your film will get X-ray. Best not using this

The thing here is to get as little or none X-ray during your trip especially you need to do transit or change flight during your trip.

Do not too worry if your film go throught X-ray. It will only fog after maybe more than 50 film safe X-ray.

Best just let them hand check and make their life easy to check:)

If you pack your film nicely in a transparent zip-loc bag and request politely for hand inspection, most of the time the immigration officers will oblige... I remember once when I was clearing custom in Chennai, the senior officer was quite friendly, took over my Bessa, asked me how to focus and then fired a few shots himself before letting me pass. Of course, I found out subsequently his shots were all out of focused! :bsmilie:

Hi bro. I've travelled with lots of film in my bag. All went thru X-ray with no problems. Its safe for slower speed film up to 400. From what I heard, if ur bringing 1600 films then its best to request for hand inspection.

I've carried delta 3200 across the airport xray scanners without issues.. I also think lead lined bags isn't worth the money or trouble and it may make you look suspiscious.. besides, if you have x-ray fogs.. it is very obvious as it isn't a complete fog of the entire frame.. it appears as bands or wavy patterns..

been through many times. nothing happened.

If everyone film has been through the scanner with no problem, then how did people came up with the idea that x-ray scanner can fog films? Commercial scam to sell lead bags which will fail the check in the end and have officers asking you to open the bag and check the stuff inside manually? Seriously, if I am the officer, I will ask you to open the bag which I cannot scan through. If I am stubborn and had a bad lunch, I might even increase the intensity of the scanner and ask you to place your canister on the personal belonging container and go through the scanner again.

have always just leave my films in my bag and going through the scanner without any problem.
recently brought lots of asa1600 film through the scanner when coming back. so far shot 1 roll and doesn't seems to have any issue.

I haven't got the chance to travel with film. But after quite a lot of reading up and research, I can sum this up in a few points (maybe).

- Be courteous to the security officers. Don't give them a huge nasty frown because they're wasting your time, you are causing quite a bit of ruckus for them as well.
- Call up beforehand to make arrangements for visual inspection if possible.
- You are advised to request for a visual inspection for EI 1600 and above.

- Put all your film cassettes in a CLEAR ziploc bag or any other bag that is CLEAR and TRANSPARENT. Lead bags will only make the X-Ray machine operators tune up the power of the rays because they can't see what is in the bag.
- Never leave your film in your luggage. Hand carry always.
- Place the film cassettes in a different orientation every time it gets through the scanner.

- Process the film at the visiting country.
- Mail back the film and make sure to mark it as photographic goods.

x-rays scanner in the airport are typically film safe.
remember the films canisters themselves are made of metal. make sure the finished roll in the camera is rewound back into the canister when you check in for your return trip.
no need any special bags etc.

i always travel with lots of film(100 to 400), which have gone thru lots of x-ray machines. so far, no problem.

You don't need a lead bag, it will only cause delays.

Best is to keep them in a clear ziploc and ask them to hand check if its high iso film.

800 and below is fine though. I think most XRays are film safe nowadays.

If unsure just get them to check for you.
