Interested in the G1158 MkII Carbon Fiber, not sure about price, should be around $650-$700. BTW what head will you be using ??.

I'm thinking of getting slik cf tripods (specifically the 713CF). would you know how it compares to the Gitzos?

The Euro has gone up quite a bit since last year, even with MO, it wouldn't be very much cheaper either. I got my 1228 late last year for S$790, even before they adjust the price for GST! Just take a look how much they charge at B&H or other on-line vendor! :)

Denis - G1128 or G1158, never heard of G1158
------- i try to get Arcatech but the MO has been cancel.

mpenza - not thinking of getting Gitzo?, Slik me not really familiar, but i find G1228 would be a ideal piece for investment for long term, but still depend on how many weight you want to carry. i had looking for a tripod quite sometime already, CF G1228 would be < 2KG with Arcatech, it is shorter and it carry at least 8 KG, if you plan to have 80-200mm/ 300mm most likely G1128/7 not a good choice.

Yes it is a G1158, maybe very new. Maybe we can take a look at CP later ?. I prefer to carry light (very light). I already have a Benbo but slighly over 1kg but bulky and I don't like to carry it around. G1158 carry at least 8kg and just tip the scale at 1kg. Fold very small. I can put up with some "unsteadyness" but carbon fiber is suppose to be OK.

Oh Yes, I forgot that there is the Explorer series, maybe I should wait for it. I particularly like the offset centre column. Works like the Benbo that I have, very versatile.

Explorer CF series will be the G2228/2227, there is also an aluminuim version. Available @ CP. :)

I was looking for something lighter and cheaper but could take at least 4-5 kg. I don't use tripods that much too cos I hate carrying too many stuff around. The Gitzos CF are quite a bit more expensive than the Slik (should be less than $500 for the Pro 713 CF in the US)....

I got a 2228 Explorer from CP for $666 in Jan. this year. You guys might want to take it as a reference.

Any spec for the Explorer, like how heavy etc.
Thanks

I don't have any literature at hand and for some strange reason, Gitzo has not included the Explorer series on the spec sheet on their website. Steven did told me the 2228 has a load capacity of about 6kg. I suggest you go to CP and find out more from him. He'll be more than happy to help you out with the specs.

I was looking at the Gitzo 2228 but finally bought the Manfrotto 441 CarbonOne which is about 500g lighter (1.6kg). I prefer the quick release leg locks to the twisting type. The Manfrotto has the removable centre column that serves the same function as pivoting Gitzo one.

You can get the 441 CarbonOne at $660+5% GST from CP.

Just to share, I have recent ordered the Kirk BH3 Ballhead from Kirk Enterprise in the US. The Kirk BH1 and BH3 received very favourable reviews from users. Total price including Fedex and GST is about S$500.

A Gitzo CF tripod like the 1227/1228 and the Acratech Ultimate Ballhead make for an amazingly light combo, able to support up to 70/80-200 lens + body. Total weight (tripod + ballhead) is slightly less than 2kg. Great stuff but extremely pricy (esp the tripod  )

I can vouch for the BH3. It's relatively light (20oz) and is very robust. Holds a good weight too (recommended up to 300mm f2.8 or 400mm f3.5).

I combine it with the Explorer for a pretty good macro combo. Can go down real low for the ground-level shots. This is an example of a setup :

The Explorer weighs in a 2kg, so it's not particularly a lightweight tripod. But the design allows for really weird angle shots, and has a stepless, independent angle setting for each of its 3 legs.

IMO, the Acratech Ultimate Ballhead will have a better edge over the BH-3 for low-level macro shots.

Slik 713 was about $450 w/ gst the last time I asked, but I think the legs are a bit smallish...
I think if you want Slik you better go with 813 - 2 months ago it was only $448 b/f gst or about $470.

btw the legs locking on gitzo feels so much better than slik...
